Bolt weight?

Post by kmaxwell5 »

Just got Axiom and I am shooting Gold tip Devastaors 20" bolts with 4 blade 100 grn. Muzzy broad heads and they shoot great. But with the bolt and broad head it only weighs about 250 grn. The website says shoot 350 grn bolts. Will this hurt the crossbow to shoot lighter bolts?

What are my options to make bolts heavier? Heavier inserts? I would like to continue to shoot the bolts and broad heads I have if I can. Thanks

Being "Gold Tip" I am sure you can get 110 grain "Gold Tip" inserts.

Best to get new arrows. they don't seem to get very good reviews.

You say they shoot good. Which says you have been shooting them already. How are they flying and no dryfire yet?

I don't see anyway possible for a for a 20in GT with fletching, inserts, and 100gr broadhead to only weigh 250grs. My 18in GT 11, 110gr insert, 100gr Wasp BH, 2in Blazers, weigh in at 385grs.

Are you using a scale to weight the arrows or published data added up to get the total weight. The Devastators are 7.5 gr/in so the shaft itself weights 150 gr.. What type of insert does it have aluminum or brass, aluminum can be from 38 gr/in up. What type of vanes do they have 2" blazer vanes for 3 are 18 gr/in and what type of nock plastic or aluminum. Plastic can be from 6 gr/in. A 20" Devastator with 38 gr insert, 2" blazer vanes 18 gr., plastic nock 6 grains and 100 gr field tip would have a total weight of 312 gr. If you replace the aluminum insert with a 92 gr. brass insert the arrow total weight would be 366 gr.

They fly great and shoot about 2" groups at 30 yards and no dry fire.

Ok guys thanks for all the help and info. The Gold tip website says 7.5 grn. per inch. Never thought about the weight of the vanes and insert. The inserts are brass and my broad heads are 100 grn. So I will weigh one on my digital mailing scale and see.(forgot I had one) Also I have been hunting with crossbows for about 5 years now but just traded up to the Axiom before that I had a Horton Legend II. It was a nice crossbow but I wanted an Excalibur so I found a good deal from a friend on the Axiom. Never considered weight of bolt before I found this website and got my Axiom and really started getting into the website then realized it mattered. I hope to learn more and as much as I can.
