breaking down crossbow

Post by mbc4 »

need help in breaking down my vortex; used permatex blue and have only been able to beak loose two screws on the diss. bars so far nothing else bent and twisted a few allen wrenches in the process, tried auto center punching to no avail, i think my bow limb system is now one piece for good. :x

I've never had to do it, but I believe people apply a little heat to the screw to remove them.

I agree with Bullseye but you may want too try a small MINI TORCH they are small with a very focused flame as opposed to the bottle touches less focused flame to prevent damage to limbs and limb gasket good luck

A good allen socket set with a ratchet are easier to work with as well. As mentioned, heat will help a lot, you can apply it indirectly by putting an allen key in the bolt and heating the allen key with a mini butane torch. Keep the bolt above the allen key, as the heat will rise and be much more affective, then insert the correct allen socket and proceed to tap it with a hammer, then undo it with the ratchet. Mechanics gloves are a good idea to with the parts being heated.

It can be done this way too, just a bit slower, but it does work.

hey guys thanks for the tips, will have to get an allen socket set first and try that; heat scares me because the limb bolts may get to hot for the limbs, will never use loctite again did not have problems before just thought it would would be more secure like some members said, that was an understatement.

If you get the socket type allen key wrenchs , you could try giving the bolt a rap with a hammer via the socket . Sometimes the shock will help loosen the bolt . Otherwise indirect heat will be needed .

I just looked at some of my loc-tic to make sure Im right and if you used the Permatex blue bottle ..read the label.. mine says High Strength .
the product is red but the bottle is blue. not sure if that's what you used but what I getting at is no matter what the color you/we use make sure its the low strength removable type.
