New guy with red dot question

Post by BRASF0311 »

Hello All,
I am new here and new to crossbows. I just pick up a barely used Exomax that came with everything except a scope. I had a red dot scope (with single dot) laying around, so I put it on. I had read an article somewhere on line where the author mentioned that he would prefer a single dot sight and sight it in for thirty yards. He said that the Exomax was so fast that the point of impact for twenty and forty yards would only be a couple inches high or low. I sighted mine in at thirty yards and found my point of impact is about ten inches high at twenty yards and ten inches low at forty yards. When I registered the Exomax with Excalibur, the nice lady told me that my carbon arrows where what comes standard with the Exomax. I am using 100 grain field points which she told me would be fine for the overall weight of the bolt.
So now that you have the whole story, my question is- does a single dot sight really work, and should the bolt impact be ten inches off of the thirty yard setting?
Thanks for any info on this.

Welcome to the forum!!! :D :D
Having never shot a red dot scope i'm not really qualified to answer your question, but 10in off at 20 @ 40 doesn't sound right to me. You want to keep your total arrow/broadhead weight above 350gr. If your using the carbon firebolts that come with the bows that would put you around 368ish gr.
You want a good FOC, i shoot 125gr on my firebolts. If you have brass inserts up front your good with 100gr.
Might want to check out some scopes with a speed ring, excal shadowzone, Tactzone or some of the Hawkes.
Good luck.

xcalibur- Thank you for pointing out the arrow performance chart. You're right, my point of impact is greater than that referenced on the chart. Would that indicate that my Exomax is shooting slower that advertised? I don't have access to a chrono to find out for sure.

georgiaboy- Thank you for the scope recommendations, and I do have a spare battery for my red dot too. I am sorry, but what does FOC mean (forward of center)?

I think some more trigger time is in order too.

Please post any PM's here, because I have been notified that I am not authorized to read them. What's up with that?

xcalibur- Using the standard bolts that come with the Exomax, and shooting from the kneeling position at 20 and 30 yards, but off the bench at 40 yards.

onebigskittle- Thanks and I'm near Catlett.

vixenmaster- Sorry, but I'm not sure what size dot it is. I prefer scopes, that's why the red dot was just laying around.

Thanks to all for the assistance with this issue.

I shot a exomax for quiet a while and I agree with the others ..if you are nailing target at 30 and shooting 10" high at 20 that doesn't sound right.
can you show us a pic or two of the bow close up of the riser/string area and maybe show us your arrows too?

Thanks guys for all the help. I have been thinking about putting a compact scope on the Exomax and trying it again this weekend if the weather is nice. I'll take some pics then and see what you guys think. Thanks again.
