Some 405 testing

Post by pinshooter »

My muscles are growing lol Still getting a C2 but I'm getting more used to cocking the 405. Probably shot 30-40 times today with some test results. Now I'm not a long range shooter...just not my thing. I'm just setting up to hunt, thats it. Not having shot broadheads in the bow I sighted in 1" high at 30yd to allow for what I might test out. I know spitfires would hit about 2" low if I bought some of those.

The bag shots show what drop it has, 381fps from 20 to 35yd (with the 30yd sight in) There is 1/2" variance between the left and right side. One side is 2.5" difference, other side is 3" difference and this difference may very well be me. At 35yd it doesn't take much to be off 1/2" but you guys get the jest...0-35yd one crosshair if you sight in at 30yd. 1" high at 20yd and 1.5"-2" low at 35yd.

Arrows are 20" BE, 110gr inserts. Broadheads all I shot was 100gr 1" slick tricks at my 30yd sight in. They did shoot about 2" low. I stuck some WV chrome on my target. 4 shot pattern in that picture. I measured and farthest center of arrows are 1". So 1" group at my 30yd sight in. I know some will want to see what it does at longer distances but I'm about to wear out my target and even in a new spot it buries the arrows up to the fletching and past the edge of the fletching after I shot 3 shots :-) I will need a better target. It really hits the target hard...I would not want to be on the receiving end of this :-)

Yep I plan on keeping the 330 :) My youngest son really likes it now that I dropped some extra weight and lowered the scope. It fits him very well and it will be a good backup bow for me. 405 is what I will mostly hunt with :) I should be getting my C2 crank today and like you Hester I want to test some 20" arrows out of the 330.

Speaking of arrow lengths

I think they should shoot fine, however they wouldn't be practical, since they will stick out about 1.5" beyond the stirrup.

Speaking of arrow length, something I found, for lack of a better word, "interesting" is the arrow length recommendations on the back of the Excalibur 2014 catalogue. The arrow length for the Matrix 405, with a power stoke of 13.87" is 18", while on the Vixen II, with a power stroke of only 13.5" it's 20". :?

In my opinion, the appropriate length for all the Excalibur crossbows in the current lineup should be 18" or at most 19" on the Axiom & Ibex.

Also, I've found that 20" arrows are a perfect fit for the Exocet with the 15.5" power stoke, and 21" arrows for the Exomax's and Equinox's 16.5" power strokes.

I'm using 20" in the 405. I wanted the extra weight and length and I still get 381fps. I know a lot of people like 18" arrows I just prefer 20" if I can shoot them. I've not had a lot of time to play with the 330 so its not fair for me to evaluate right now but I'll say so far with broadheads I'm getting slightly better accuracy out of the 405 than the 330 using a longer arrow. But again I still have a lot of playing to do with the 330 and I'm strapped for time right now. The 405 made it easy :) Didn't even have to tune my arrows. Sighted in at 30yd with field tips, broadheads hit a tough low, raised the crosshairs, done :) Next shooting round I'm going to spend time with the 330. I have some 18", 19.5" and 20" arrows to run more test on.

Pin I'm sure you have seen the test with the Spynal Tapps Jerry sells . Where they shoot flatter and does not drop as much from 20 and 30 yards. Would be great to see how they shot in the 405.

Comfybear:

Your observations and response to length is spot on.
Although many want to test different combinations with their bows, ie: weight, length, heads, etc. Length is a determined thing that best suits the bow according to manufacturers recommendation.
So much testing is done behind the scenes, then used, but we don't see it here. Only the final result that suits their bows. It is fun to test ourselves, but what is given to us as a final measurement is their results. Then we play and test different configurations from there. It's in our blood sometimes! LOL !
Have fun Guys! It's what we do, TEST !
