Matrix 405 / Exomax 350 -Speed Results

Post by ComfyBear »

Well since Strum shot up his Crony, I thought I'd see what I could do with my Shooting Crony F1.

I shot a couple of my Excaliburs, i.e. Matrix 405 & Exomax.

Here's the average speeds I got:

Matrix 405 : Using my custom string (136gr.)

404gr arrow: Total of 10 shots: (Too many to list) Avg: 380.5 fps
352gr arrow: Total of 3 shots (395.9; 395.6; 395.3) Avg: 395.6fps

Exomax: Using Boo Custom string with whiskers (278gr)

404gr arrow: Total of 3 Shots: (320.6, 319.9, 321.2) Avg.: 320.6 fps
352gr arrow: Total of 3 Shots: (331.1, 330.8, 330.1) Avg.: 330.7 fps

Not the advertised speeds, but I'd say they're faster than is needed.

EDITED: Just thought to check the difference in weight between my custom flemish twist matrix string (136gr) and Danny's EL matrix string (106gr) The 30gr. difference certainly would account for some reduction in speed on the Matrix 405.

With my Exomax and F1 Chrony I get 345-348 fps from what I recall:

-Firebolts w/ 2" blazers and 100 gr heads - 370ish grains?
-Excalibur FF string
-D-bars
-S5

Why such a big difference?

Brace height and Danny Miller string is what I think, every long limb Excal I've tested has been 1fps over or under advertised.

It also puzzled me, until I remembered that the Boo string I'm using has whiskers. It certainly is smooth shooting and reduces noise and vibration, but it's quite heavy, weighting 278gr, compared to my custom strings without whiskers, which weigh approx. 154gr. I think that would explain the reduction in speed.

What I don't understand is why, with my Exomax, there was only 10fps difference in speed between the 352gr and 404gr arrow.

As far as I'm concern, anything over 300fps is "extreme over-kill". Accuracy and stability is more of my concern. That's why my hunting arrows weigh 438gr. or more.

I've never thought about the weight of a string effecting the speed.

Maybe someone can come up with a string that's much lighter with a smaller diameter to gain even more speed?

When I first started making strings, as a test I made a few lighter ones. Although the speed increased, I found that so did the noise and vibration, which in my opinion made them undesirable.

I feel that Excalibur crossbows are capable of more speed than is needed. Therefore I prefer, by using a heavier string and arrow, to convert some of their speed potential to produce a quieter and more pleasant shooting crossbow. As an added bonus, a heavier slower arrow is more stable, which should make it more accurate in the real world.

Danny Miller factory strings are about as light as your going to get, smaller strings have been made but they don't last long, stay safe with factory small string, JMHO
