I really never tried to find out but its hundreds of yrs old style. Heck maybe the Mongolians did it when they made up the 1st crossbows. I do knowed the oldest dated crossbows came from China & were dated as fer back as 771 BC.

I agree with Boo, Europe, hence the name "Flemish" string.
The ones I saw around Europe looked damn crude compared to the fine looking versions we see today.
I went to a lot of medieval museums and exhibitions around mainland Europe and Scandinavia. Saw some interesting variations of crossbows that shoot rocks, steel balls, metal rods, and some that shot bolts the size of fence posts at you
It was the use of steel as the prod that allowed them to produce these ridiculous poundage weapons. The names change depending on the country your in, but essentially they are all different variations of the same animal.
It was seeing all this that got me back into the game when I got home.
Luckily for us, string materials have moved light years ahead now.

Native Americans made cordage much the same way. Long string or rope out of short pieces of sinew or plant fiber.Opposing twists kept from unraveling.
