Durability of stock coatings

Post by Downunder »

Im just wondering about the durabity of stock coatings, I have a brown stocked Vixen in which I find has non destructable plastic or whatever stock. Now the camo and other stock finishes are just a surface coating are they?
How durabable are they? , does the coating scratch or flake after time?
Im trying to build my piggy bank to bring a 380 to New Zealand and was thinking of the black one but if surfaces scratch would be camo as probaby not show as much maybe I was thinking too.
Your input greatly appriecated :)

They are very durable. You are not likely to scratch it.
However, they do not like Deet, that stuff can strip a bow of its coatings.

One summer's use will soften a hardhat to the point where you can turn it inside out!!!!

It will dissolve automotive paint quite easily as well.

Be careful!!!

Not to drift too far from the topic, but Deet was removed from the shelves here for a bit, then reintroduced when west Nile showed up again.
Nothing beats a thermacell though.

You are right about how bad deet can be on plastic. I don't think our New Zealand friend needs to worry much about that stuff, however. I just came back from a 5 week visit there. NOBODY has screens on their windows--at least as far as we saw. One night I think I may have had one mosquito (or mosquito like critter) visit me in bed.

So, unless they are using it for after shave, they don't need it!!

Used to be able to buy 95 % DEET but I know that was removed from the shelves and since then it's a much milder formulation.
The first stuff I used was armed forces surplus after the war.
Early 70s not much was known about harmful effects.

This topic is getting interesting !... Yes the tourists use Deet insect repellents by the gallons here ! .. the locals choke on it ... cough cough !
Anywhere around the Fiordland bush/water we have sandflies and this goes for anywhere really on the West Coast of the South Island, in swampy areas you may find some mossies.
I read on this thread there is 90% Deet in the USA or Canada ??, this must almost be paint stripper !!!!.. on the ol' bottle I have its only 40% and that maybe the regs here.
Personally I don't use it, don't like it at all so I guess I won't have an issue on the possible 380 :-)

PS... If you are thinking of coming to visit New Zealand don't let the sandflies put you off, they are very manageable !!!

The stuff on the shelves is actually 99% deet, it disappeared for a short time, but returned to fight off the diseases spread by mosquitos.
I put a dab on the back of my hunting hat to help with blackflies, but not on skin.
Pretty bad when even the bugs know it will kill you.
It completely removed the dipped finish from my camo shotgun stock, to the point it had to be replaced. The right placement of a thermacell, and bugs will not be an issue.
