Stripped Screws

Post by Species8472 »

Trying to install my new Triggertech and one of the 3/32 allan screws holding the scope mount to top of the trigger assembly has stripped. Any suggestions on a removal strategy?

X2, heat the wrench! Use light heat too! I have even heard guys get a towel hot with water, and let it set on there a while.

Good luck!

first off throw the chessy allen wrench away!!
get a 3/32 tip that will fit into a 1/4" nut driver.. then lay it on something flat.
heat the driver tip almost red hot ..then put unto the screw ..the heat will transfer.. if you already stripped the screw so badly that wont work ..then dremel a slot in it and use a flat screwdriver..
did I mention throwing the chessy allen wrench away?

I would suggest that you use these larger head torx screws when you reassemble.

Remember to check the screw length as the front screws may hit the latch if too long. Just check with one of the old screws.

Use a dremel to cut a slot in the bolt head. Then use a flat screwdriver to remove. Very easy. I have had to do it more than I'd like to. Replace them with something like what deerstalker recommends and you'll never have this problem again. The stock screws are like single use...they're crap.

Thanks for all the tips. Ultimately I succeeded by drilling a pilot hole and using an extractor:

I am sure the other methods would have worked as well - just paranoid about adding heat and did not want buy a dremel.

Well done with the screws.
Just a small tip, make sure your replacement screws are the the same length, definitely not longer. Even 1/8" longer, and you can jam the trigger in one position.

Looks like the LocTite did it's work. Next time tap in an oversize Torx bit and heat the bit to melt the LT.

I have usually made the situation worse with a screw extractor.

That's perfect. Exactly the same way I removed my stubborn tiny hex head screws from my Matrix 355's scope base. I installed #20 Torx pan head 8-32 screws as upgraded replacements.
