2nd Tom down with 1980's model Excalibur Relayer

Post by R.J. »

Set up along a cut trail boardering Cedar swamp this am ( Hardwoods to my East and West , swamp behind me , South ) .

6:30 am a nice tom travelling alone comes North from the freshly planted corn field ... he come in silent but struts and gobbles like crazy when he see's my decoy .

Long story short ... @ 15 yards while he is focused on my hen decoy , I let fly a 2216 with 130 gr Wasp broadhead . Shooting slightly uphill and East . Good hit !

He flap / runs North East and I find him 35 yards stone dead in the field .

24lbs , 10inch beard , 1 1/4 spurs ... a real nice mature tom .

What an awsome morning hunt ... A great start to a very busy day > Heading to Lindsay Ontario. to visit with my Daughter > She is in a Fish and Wildlife program at Sir Sandford Fleming College > Then heading to Toronto for dinner and Vaughn Bass Pro to shop for some insulated waders she needs for an Electrofishing study course ... Will put a lot of KM's on my Tacoma today !

Good Luck to all that are chasing Turkeys thru till the end of our Ontario season !

Congrats on the turkey and thanks for the pictures. I love the close up of the spur. On your picture with the turkey hanging by the woodshed, how do you keep the tail fan from flopping down? I had to lay mine out on a log because I couldn't get the hanging picture to turn out.

Thanks all ... A fun hunt for sure !

The old Relayer delivers a slower arrow , but it still does the job ! ... Cool to hunt with one of the older bows for a change !

As for the tail fan for pictures ... Can't do it unless the wind is with you ... I fan the tail , take a small stick and prop it behind and across the bottom of the fan , then push the tail back and the crossbow limb temp holds it in place , step back and take a quick picture before the tail fan falls out of place ... I take several pic's till I get one that has the tail in a good position .

On a windy day ! ... forget it ! even the mantle feathers get blown out of position !

This picture was taken years ago .. the shed wall faces West so the wind will normally pin the tail against the wall long enough for a picture ... again , takes several pictures to get one just right !

Image

This morning was awsome > cool / Clear / Calm and the sun came out great ! ... Perfect for pictures > I got done the pictures and clean up just in time before the rain started !

I was raining pretty good when I headed ot to Lindsay ...

Congratulations R.J.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Old bow, aluminum arrow, Wasp broadhead, your success makes me feel better about deciding to stick with my Phoenix for another year or two. Getting close and making a good shot is still fun and productive!
