I posted something with the "K" word, and it automatically changed it to SPAM.

I'd be reeeeaaaaal careful with mushrooms, there are some that look like other edible types but they're not edible. I ate some one time made me feel really funny. Just to be sure it was the shrooms that did it I ate some again

Re: Mushroom help
Tough to tell from just one mushroom. Looks like Coprinus Micaceus. Good and edible, small but often found in large numbers. This one is well past it's prime. The general rule of mushroom hunting is never use a single specimen to identify them, and if you don't know what you're doing don't pick em. They are like messing with the wrong woman...it can kill you. Seriously.
Funny this should come up as I'm cooking a delicious feast for 6 friends: Tame rabbit, in mushroom gravy with wild-picked surfer shelf mushrooms, beer boiled carrots, garlic mashed potatoes, spinach/strawberry salad, served with garlic knots (rolls) and three chilled fine whites.

Re: Mushroom help
My Wife's uncle always goes mushroom picking in the late spring and summer when we have had a lot of rain...they are the most enjoyable eating and best tasting of all...especially in a nice marinara sauce, with chicken and spaghetti....He definitely knows what he is doing and we haven't loss a family member yet!
With that said, he always warns that you have to know what you are doing and the ones he picks are always in a bunch and not single stalks or individual mushrooms.....

Check out this link....the ones he brings home look like the one in the top picture....
Good luck and be careful!

Re: Mushroom help
Definitely be careful, many varieties are identical to the eye. Best to get a couple as a sample and take them to a known expert in your area.

Re: Mushroom help

Re: Mushroom help
Actually the are similar in appearance to the untrained eye. If you consider the distinguishing characteristics in totality: gills, stipe, vail, cap, overall appearance and, most of all, the color of the spores spores. No mature poisonous mushroom I'm aware of is identical to a non poisonous one.Dash wrote:Definitely be careful, many varieties are identical to the eye.
