String advise

Post by hundl1 »

Sorry in advance if this has been covered many times. I have a 380 and was looking for advise on the best string to use. What are the different strings available, the differences between them and advantages and dis-advantages to different types of strings....thanks

2 types of style strings, endless loop & flemish. Thar be lots of diff material that can be used fer either. Dacron B50, Fast Flite D97, FF+, B55, trophy, 452X, Force 10, 8190,8125 & X. Astro Flite, D75, Rhino, Xcel, XS2 & a few others. Some are more forgivin & elongate/creep. Some are min stretch strong n fast, but loud n some are not loud. Once you get into the upper quality materials the price goes up fast because of spool costs.

There you have it the best advice from the string makers themselves.

I personally only shoot Flemish strings they stretch a little until they get settled in but they're very durable and exceed all my needs in a string.

Alright guys. . .you've given us the two design types and the various types of materials that are used. Now elaborate on why you would choose this type over that type and this material over that material for your string construction. What are some examples of "string styles" and the "different needs" one would be trying to achieve with their xbow?

Not only to educate the OP a little more when choosing a string, but myself and others too. I think we all want the "Magic Unicorn String" that is lightning fast but also quiet as a church mouse, that won't destroy your limbs and one you can also shoot a ba-gillion shots off of before retiring it. So what are the facts and personal ideas of the perfect string?

Flemish strings for strength, and softer shots. Add whiskers to tame vibration at a cost of around 5 FPS. Speeds are pretty uniform with all of the better material choices that I have tried, and chronographed. The three that I found to offer the lowest stretch are Rhino, Fury, and Force 10. I have not tried every material in the world, so that is just my 2 cents! Lowest stretch would be an endless loop design, and the snappier sounding shot.

Some ppl. want a quiet string- dacron & or large amount of strand count into a string. The more the string marerial elongates the more you have to adjus yer brace ht. this equates to PIA! Dacron & D97 BCY are the leaders in that class. The less stretch/creep the string material has the snappier the sound of string if'en you use min strand count. Speed is whats all in ppl's minds. Which brings up a related subject of arrow weight. More yer arrow weighs the less noise produced at the shot. On the other hand there have been alot of limb tips bein broken n such you ever wonder how ? The owners say i have guardian no dryfire ? My a** they are shootin way to light of arrows say 300gr total wt. fer their chrony speeds to show ppl. on youtube n such, they think ppl. at Excal be stupid. I been shootin these fer almost 18 yrs & have tryed lots of this stuff 15 yrs ago.

Vixenmaster, you got me worrying a little about light arrows.

I have firebolts with 125g bullet tips for target shooting. what would you call a light arrow?

Mclakin, you have an Equinox listed in your profile. Assuming that's the bow you're referring to, Excalibur says 350 grains is the minimum weight you can safely shoot. Anything lighter is risking damage to the bow, there isn't enough arrow weight to absorb the energy. Also assuming you're shooting 20" Firebolts, which weigh around 270 grains, so with the 125 grain tip you should be around 395 give or take a couple grains. You're OK.

A 350 grain arrow gives you a small bit of excess safety factor.
I won't say who or how much but there are individuals that shoot less than 350 gr arrows all day long without an issue.

Thanks Kegbelly you as correct. I'll keep with a minimum of 350g. I hear lots of talk on arrow weights but im never sure if it includes tips.

When you hear "The Manufacturer Minimum Arrow Weight" it is total arrow weight, that includes the point of choice.

Im using BCY-X string material and really like it so far . I use 40 strands for a string that stretches/creeps very little . I have several people shooting these also and so far everyone's happy.

Nice work, I'm shooting an endless loop with the 355, and it is doing great. Keep up the good work!
