Some broadhead failures

Post by Masboy »

Our block bit the dust so we just shot at a piece of 3/8 inch quarry belt with a 5/8 piece behind it a few inches.all shooting with a Mathews 72 lb.30 inch draw with 375gr. Total arrow wt .Carbon express blue streak arrows at 29 inches all shot at 30yds. With lots of heads

Magnus stinger 85 &100 gr. 2&4 blade
Slicktrick grizztricks 100gr. 4 blade
Montec 100gr.
Rage 100gr. Two blade
Rocket steelhead 100gr. 3 blade 1-1/2 inch cut
Grim reaper white tail 100gr. 3 blade 2 inch cut

did not penatrate the 5/8 belt with the blades
Rage
Grim reapers

Just sticking in 5/8 belt a little
Rocket steelheads

Burying in the 5/8 belt but no blades out the back
Montec
Slicktricks

Complete pass thru of all belts
Magnus stingers

Broadhead failure
Rage broke off 1 blade at times but did open on contact of belt

Grim reaper bent blades on most shots an never opened till after thru 3/8 belt

Rockets bent blades on most shots an never opened till after thru 3/8 belt

Good news broadheads with no problems at all after many shots

The Montec, Slicks and Magnus have always been proven performers and one again shine in your test. Quarry belt is one tough medium and will separate broadhead integrity in a hurry and it is no surprise at your results. The forum users can really benefit from your test when choosing time comes for the most durable broadhead.

In my experience I have seen plenty of deer bone trauma using the Rage and Rocket mechanicals with only some bent blades after pass through since bones are not near quarry belt tough.

Thank-you for this post, we have soon some informative posts recently such as the broadhead data Keith posted. Great info guys!

That's great information Masboy, thanks for taking the time to share that.
I'm glad to see my choice of bh (Stingers) rates well. If I run across a rabid quarry belt in the wild, I'm ready

I know it,s a tuff test an think they all will kill deer . I,m just one that shoots the same heads an arrows I hunt with many times before I ever hunt with them. I always have my favorite arrow an head with a number in my quiver that gets the first shot
I wouldn't, be too concerned about putting a rage hypodermic on with new blades an going hunting with it :D

Masboy I'm not stepping on your thread, these test are about 4yrs old and the stinger wins hands down, the slick trick, strychnine, and rage were not up to it, also these were on 475 to 500gr arrows, the stinger was350grs all shot at 20yds with my Max. Your testing just puts icing on the cake for me. Leading cutting edge is the ticket, thanks for your time.

What, no boltcutters? I'll save you the trouble. I use the exact same setup for my backstop. Full penetration without passthrough and no damage. :D Thanks for the test results. If I were to switch, I would probably go with slick tricks.

I,ve never tried the shuttle an lots I would like to try. at 50 yds I would have to pick the slicktricks from my shooting. My slicktricks have shot great out to 80 yds. on calm days . hard to beat small bladed heads like expandables at long range in all conditions for accuracy.

Bolt cutters are fine accurate heads but I just never get lots of blood from the smaller heads . My son makes me jealous after I see all the blood he gets from his rage

I'm sold on the 2" cut Hammerheads! The buck I shot last year went 20 yds and crashed dead on the spot, shot placement is everything!
