Leupold Crossbones Problem

Post by wathst »

I bought a Crossbones scope and rings from Danny Miller (his rings, not Leupold ones), last week and sighted it in with 150 g field points. No problem, I used the method that has been posted on this forum a few times. Since I have not decided whether to go with 150, 125 or 100 g broadheads I decided to resight it in with 100 g field points. Of course the first shot was too high, so I cranked down the elevation and tried again. Lower this time but still too high. I kept doing this until I couldn't move the dial anymore, but the shots were still about an inch too high. The scope is set up per the Leupold instructions and I even tried moving the scope forward a little to see if the barrel got a little wider at the back and changed the elevation but no such luck. Before I phone Danny, does anyone have any suggestions, aside from adding a heavier insert?
Thanks

If your POI is high, then you have to raise your crosshairs to the POI.

I believe that you are adjusting the scope in the right direction. Burris makes some Signature Zee Rings that have inserts which allow you to set up the scope where you then have adjustment range up down & left right depending which inserts you use and how they are installed. Here is a video on their use.

Make certain your rings are seated correctly. It is easy to not have them set properly in the grooves and this can cause a height problem. If they are seated correctly try swapping them around by moving front to back etc. and see if that helps.

Swap your rings around and try that. If that does not help you can cut a small piece of a coke can about the width and lenght of the bottom ring. Take the scope out of the rings and place this small piece of coke can(shim) in the bottom rear ring. Place the scope back in the rings and tighten it down and see if that helps.

Some questions. What xbow and arrows are you shooting? Is your string 'settled' in yet and keeping your bheight?

If/when you call Danny, can you use a cordless at your range? It may help.......

I'd try the ring swaps 1st, shouldn't need to shim the ring except as a last resort, but it's a good tip........

I am sure you are adjusting the scope correctly. I doubt swapping the rings will do anything also moving the scope fore and aft is for eye relief and wouldn't change elevation. Curious what model Excalibur crossbow and arrows are you using?

Also, what manufacture and height rings are you using? The Leupold crossbones can be mounted very low.

On my Matrix 355, I use Leupold rifleman detachable low rings to hold my Leupold VX-I 2-7x33mm shotgun/muzzleloader NWTF edition scope. It's basically the same scope just a different reticle and color.

if you have low rings you may need to go with mediums. slightly higher rings will make the xbow shoot lower. another thing that you can try is to loosen the 4 scope base screws and hold the scope base up as you tighten. there is quite a bit of slop in some of the mounts.

Danny sends Traditions Rings most of the time with the crossbones scope .
