Lining up fletching with broadhead blades

Post by monstermash »

Being new to bow/xbow hunting, someone told me the other day that the vanes and the blades of the broadhead must be in line. I tried mine and they don't line up when tightened. I asked the question at the sports shop and he told me to sand/file the insert down enough to be able to turn and line it up. Is this what must be done, want to make sure.
Sorry if my terminilogy isn't correct.

Sand or file away if it makes you feel better, but it isn't necessary. Accuracy is the same either way.

I friend of mine tunes every braodheads on his arrows. I don't, I just tighten and let em ripe. I shoot both crossbows and verticle bows. My friend shoots only verticle and I'm just as good as he is. If tuning does help, I can't tell. I've used rage, muzzys, slick tricks, nap, boltcutters and a few others I can't think of. Just go out and shoot and see what works for you.

i would shoot a test one the way they line up when tight, if your satisfied with the flight leave 'em alone if you need to tune 'em then lining up could improve flight, with aluminum shafts i just heat the shaft & twist with broadhead tight to line up vanes and blades and yes it can make a difference.

Tighten them down, fire away. That has worked for me.

I line my cock vane with the larger vertical blades. Seems to help with planing, or at least in my mind it does anyhow. Plus it just looks cool

I shoot a 405 with BEE and 110 grain brass inserts and a 100 grain ST standard and Blazer vanes... I've noticed that in order to hit the "X" with this combo, my blades need to be in the 12-3-6-9 position.. when I have them in any other configuration, they seem to plane on me..

I've also noticed this same pattern with my vertical bow as well.

You can use a small rubber O-ring between the head and the insert.

I've done both and sometimes it seems helps and sometimes it doesn't. If it does, it's always pointing to an arrow issue though. If it gets you right on at one yardage, try a different yardage, and I bet it will be off in a different direction. When fixed blades don't hit the same as FPs ( I'm talking left-right only as they might have more drag an be low - this is OK) the arrow is flying in a small spiral towards the target. So at one yardage it hits at "2 o'clock", and at another yardage it hits at "7 o'clock" etc. Probably nothing wrong with the BH, but the arrow is not square. Spin check your arrows first with the BHs installed and look for run-out at the pt. of the BH. If that's good, you will most likely be OK.
FWIW, I seem to have better accuracy with 4 blade or 2 blade BHs than with some 3 blade. I think it has to do with the different kind of turbulence created by the 2 or 4 blades that allows better air to hit the vanes and let's them do their job.

I think he is just funning there Anthony. :D

But I do agree with the thought that it has no affect either way..
I think back when we were shooting long arrows out of slow verticals it did help to and extent. these smoking fast, super powerful, short arrow flingers put it out there its a non issue. Now that said if it give you more confidence to line em up ,then go for it. JMHO
