Been Huntin' Some...
So far 2014 has started out with a bang.....well maybe a thwack! After a loooooong wait I finally got to drive 1481 miles to Nebraska and hunt bison again. This time I went with my brother-in-law. Being his first time he used a rifle, but I used my crossbow again, and was able to harvest a nice 3-4 yr old cow. He shot a nice yearling bull. We had a great time and brought home a ton of wonderful bison meat. My 575 grain Easton FMJs tipped with Magnus Stinger 2 blades worked great. Not a pass through as I first thought but it buried in the offside shoulder/leg bone area according to the processor.
When we got back to NC, we had a few days before he had to go back to PA and he had bought a 1 day out of state license so even though it was raining we went out for opening day of the NC archery season. At 8:30 a nice doe caught me by surprise. I was sitting on the ground in my ghille suit, bow to my left with my hat over the scope to keep it "dry". The suit worked great as I was able to get the bow up without her seeing me. I stopped her at 12 yds with a grunt and of course a tree was covering the area right behind her leg, but the front part of the shoulder was open so I made that shot. My BEA Zombie tipped with a 100gr Montec CS busted right through everything and she went about 40 yards. We were about 1 mile back in on public land and I had to drag her through a swampy area with "stinky mud", so I did not field dress her until I got back near the truck. Still we had her hung up and cut up by about noon. But after that we were both pretty tired, so no more hunting that day. She is deer #1 of what I hope to be many this year as our venison donation program in Raleigh is starting to really take off. She will help feed some needy people.

AWESOME harvests! CONGRATS! Gorgeous bison! That's the finest game meat there is IMHO.
