This is such a tragedy.. sorry to hear about it :(
my question is and always is when I read these things.
how do you mistake a man for a deer?.. no matter if its an xbow or a fire arm
you have to identify your target. Not just sling ammo at it.

So sorry to hear, my thoughts are with the family...

That said I really dislike the slant of that article. It's written by someone with a bone to pick with crossbows with their scary scopes and rifle butt ends,

And very little about how a hunter had a brain fart and mistook his friend FOR A DEER  we are so more advanced then taking pot shots at noises in the friggen bushes!!

It really bothers me that a man lost his life and some reporter uses it to further his agenda!

Yes, more bowhunters are killed in car accidents going to their hunting sites.

So, should we ban cars?

....I didn't read the author's slant as others have read...however, I do agree with the underlying principle that this was a sad day for two families.

....It should never have happened, period! We ALL know better that you should ALWAYS identify your target and know what is behind your target. It always seems to be the same mistake in that someone shot at a sound.

....I pray that it never happens again to any sportsman in the field.

My thoughts exactly. This tragedy could have been avoided entirely by positively identifying the target. I guess buck fever and adrenaline take over, I don't know. Very tragic outcome regardless.
In the National Forest I hunt there is an area with horse trails, and I've heard many times a tale where a horseback rider was shot in the leg by a bowhunter who mistook a man on horseback for a deer. :?:

I will make it plain fer anyone, no one mistakes a person fer a deer or a hog or an elk. Its all about him deciding he would shoot whatever it was regardless! :(

The "anti's" will blame the bow, xbow, pistol, shotgun, AR rifle . . . and not the person. it would be like me suing the school for beating my hind end for misspelling a word when it was the pencils fault

Its hard to admit in all these cases that it is the persons/ operators fault . . . kinda like a dry fire in simple terms, we wasn't meaning to, we educate ourselves and move on.

But theres that one individual living among us who aint been right all his life who will shoot a man w/ an xbow, will shoot a man twice w/ a 243 thinking he's a turkey roosting (missouri), will shoot a man w/ a load of #4's in the face while walking, turkey hunting (Arkansas), will shoot up a school/ theater, blow up a federal building, a person proclaiming to be a profit and kill 300 plus w/ kool aid . . .yes there is evil among us.

I'm Sorry and i apologize to all i got up on my soapbox

This is tragic. Period. I agree with Starvin Hillbilly. I've hunted for nearly forty years and have handled firearms a little longer. I fail to understand HOW you mistake anyone with your quarry???!!!! It's simply not possible. I don't care if it's with firearms, bows, or crossbows! Whenever you're shooting, ANYWHERE, It's YOUR responsibility to know your target and, whenever possible, what's behind your target. How tragic that a family has been devastated and changed forever for stupidity's sake. :( :x

Too sad for words. Unfortunately, some folks who don't hunt that much -and some who are propelled by the 'gotta get a deer' mantra-get super anxious about a kill. Personally, it's the end of the hunt so I put it off as long as possible (passed on three sure kills nite before last) but I think I comprehend how the previously mentioned factors can contribute to an unfortunate accident...even tho I cannot excuse the effect.

There are a lot of guys hunting that feel that pressure of a must harvest, but what happened to aim small, miss small? I just cannot imagine how these accidents keep happening! It sure puts the good hunters in a bad light! Tragic for both families really.
