Elusive Sika Deer of Maryland

Post by HorizontalArchr »

Been trying for years now to bag a marsh ghost. Fighting the phrags, wading through the thick marshes of marylands eastern shore. I live a few hours away so can only hunt 2-3 times a year. Left my house at 2:30am. Got to the boat ramp at the marsh at 5:10. Fought my way through the marsh in pitch black and for the love of God couldn't find my spot. After an extra 15 mins searching I found a suitable replacement. Climbed it just as the sun started to show a little light. Fast forward to 10 am and I haven't seen anything. This time last year buggling could be heard all around me. Oh well I thought maybe next week the rut will be in full swing. Grabbed my sika seducer call and made a few mews and chirps. 15 minutes latter figured I would try a buggle call. Not 5 minutes had past and I spot a stag checking me out 20 Yrds from my position. Swung my 380 up to take a shot and he stepped out of sight in the thick marsh grasses like the "marsh ghost" he is. Spanned around with my scope and finally see him again. He's staring me down slightly hidden behind tall grass and branches. He took one wrong step and exposed a small amount of flesh right below his front shoulder standing broadside about 15 Yrds away. It was a tough tight shot but my 380 was more than capable. Squeezed the new triggertech and off he ran with blood pouring out almost instantly. He ran in a zig zag pattern and crashed about 60-70 Yrds from where I hit him. First sika, first stag, first hunt with my new trigger. Awsome hunt! These are hard creatures to hunt and extremely hard using archery equipment. May not be the biggest stag on the block but a true trophy to me.

Thanks for the help guys. This guy weighed in at 52 lbs after being feild dressed. FYI, we have the smallest sub species of sika deer here in md. But that just makes them harder and more fun to hunt!!! :D :D
