Ideas for a unique doe taxidermy ?
Ideas for a unique doe taxidermy ?
Thank you all for the congrats posts on my first deer.
I would like to do something to have from my first deer but not sure what...
A head mount is out of the options, what about the tail? skull will be kind of boring without any antlers? I kind of find the front feet creepy but maybe if there was a unique way of mounting them?
Any Ideas?
Has anyone ever had the hide done as leather without the fur?

How about tanning the hide with the tail and without the legs...much like a beaver pelt. You can mount it on the wall or use it as a throw. On the floor, over the back of a chair or sofa.
You're only paranoid if everyone isn't out to get you.

You can make "coat hangers" from the feet.

Or hang whatever you choose:

A doe shoulder mount looks awsome if done properly and eventually hung beside and looking at a buck shoulder mount.
Re: Ideas for a unique doe taxidermy ?
you will never get your FIRST DEER again. a shoulder mount would look real good and you could hang it next to your FIRST BUCK shoulder mount when you get him

I had the hide of my first deer (a mulie doe) tanned with hair. That was back in 1985 and its been on the wall where ever I've lived since then. Right now it's on the wall in our stairway.
Do something with it! There will never be another one like this one.

Yolo, you will only get one first deer it is not the size of the trophy is all about your first deer "your first " I have been a taxidermist for over 30 some years. retired now, you can have a nice rug made from the hide or leather made of it . but if you get the head mounted you won't have a lot of skin left for a rug.

That looks awesome Vixchix, and what a great memory. Yolo, here's my thought if you can picture it. Have a taxidermist trim the tanned hide so it's neatly oval shaped except with a tail. Then have them sew two or three layers of felt (black, brown, black) or whatever colors you want around the entire outside edge of the hide like you would see on a bear rug. Just an extra thought. I've seen this done with beaver pelts and it looks great.VixChix wrote:

perhaps W.McGuire can chime in here with his thoughts on this or maybe he's done it.

Re: Ideas for a unique doe taxidermy ?
A head mount is out because of out field dressing.
I am going to get the hide made into leather. I spoke to a taxidermist yesterday and he is going to look at the hide but thinks it has been too warm to keep fur on. He said there will be too much slippage? I think I will have the feet done for hooks and the tail done for something and then the hide for leather.
Thank you all for the great suggestions.

Re: Ideas for a unique doe taxidermy ?
Slippage is loose hair. Fresh hides need the worst of fat and scrap cleaned off and salted if not folded skin side in ,rolled up bagged and frozen. Heat speeds decomposition, some thing duplicated almost by soaking a hide in water with hardwood ashes to cause hair to slip and allowing easier removal. The weak lye being the active ingredient.
If you saved any bones ,some can be used for handles and others can be sawed into rings. A kerchief slide perhaps ect. Bone can be softened and shaped also.
I buried a particular doe skull that wanted saving and lost it, dang it,but skulls are well worth saving on important kills.
