In Ontario Squirrels can be hunted, with a small game licence.

Where I hunt deer the squirrel season is from 20 September to 15 December (pretty much the entire deer season).

I have found "old bushy tail" is an outstanding way of improving your shooting skills.

Once you are adept at putting a Judo point through their heads at 15 yards a deer looks the size of Godzilla when you get in your sights.

So they (the tree rats) do provide a valuable service in some areas

they are one of the first thing i hunted at 4and5 years old my dad would take my brother and i out with him. he would stand still and we would move around the tree so they would present a shot for my dad.always skinned by poking a small hole in the middle of the back then peel both ways. mom would make squirrel pie with fresh vegetables and dumplings on top .cant remember the last time i ate one but theres enough a guy could fill your freezer around here

Terry I had a monster deer under my stand last night ... Or so I thought~ When it finally showed itself it was a 200 lb. 12 point red squirrel.

I feel your pain

Something has caused the grey squirrel population to crash in central NC. Last several years I would always see lots of squirrels while sitting in my tree stands but this year they are gone for some reason.

i would say the tree i sat in the other night had at least 8 or 10 within sight .i wonder if they will end up getting sick and dieing off . i think when coons get over populated that will happen. i dont know anyone who hunts them around here

Squirrels can help when your hunting deer too.Listen for em barking and scolding at something in the distance.I pay attention to those sounds as they can be doing that at deer just like they will to you or some other critters presence.

Isn't it funny how when you're deer hunting, squirrels are everywhere and make more racket than a herd of elephants going through the woods. But go into the woods with a 22 to bag a few bushytails and you jump 3 or 4 deer...

when we hunt the white and red oaks here, we always like to have squirrels
feeding on acorns on the ground and in the trees, same as turkeys.
while in our stands whitetail hunting.
occasionally I have seen some big gobblers run doe's off from getting there acorns.

the tree rats and birds act like a mental block to the deer. there not concerned much about anything because all they hear is critters and they think no harm around.......... 8)

Same here Gendoc. Much as the squirrels get on your nerves, the noise does offer a little cover for noises you might make.
I love to see turkeys come out on a field, many many times deer will follow... it's like the deer hang back and watch the turkeys and if the coast is clear they often come on out too. :D

For me the season runs to the 15th of Dec. in the wmu where I hunt deer.
Here at home the season closes Nov. 7th.
Daily limit of 5 and possession limit of 10.
10 is just enough for a good sized crock pot of squirrel. yum yum

I often lay my quiver on the branch beside me. Had a rat run by so close he knocked my quiver off. No second shot chances that day.
