Matrix 355 speed question

Post by agingcrossbower »

Out of my matrix 335 I am shooting a 410gr arrow at 316fps. Does that sound right to everyone? That is a far cry from 355fps. :?

No, you should be 335 plus! I get 345 with 390 grains, and find that to be pretty typical.

Some calcs:

350 grain at 355 fps gives KE of 97.8 ft-lbs
410 grain at 316 fps gives KE of 90.8 ft-lbs

Definitely something wrong as most bows become more efficient with a heavier bolt not less.

Based on same KE as calculated for 350 grain you should get 328 fps at 410 grains. In reality I would expect 330+ as bow should be a little more efficient at a bolt weight of 410 grains.

For example my 405 gives me a KE of 127 ft-lbs using a 350 grain bolt. Moving to a 486 grain bolt ups my KE to 135 ft-lbs giving an increase in efficiency of 6-7%.

I'm going to re-weigh my arrows, but I *thought* they were ~410, and I'm only getting 341 out of my Matrix 380. BEE 18", 150gr Xbow Tricks. Brace height appears correct and I got the same reading on several shots with both the broadheads and the 150gr field points. I don't remember the combination as its been a few weeks since I chrono'd it, but I want to say the same bolt with a 125gr FP ran 369. That just didn't seem right to me to have such a drop off .

Remember that Excalibur's advertised speeds on the Matrix bows are with a 350gr combo (arrow and tip). This would require the 250gr Diablo arrow and a 100gr tip. So ironically, the Matrix bows will not shoot their advertised speeds out of the box with included equipment because they are shipped with 150gr field points.

With that said, Excalibur says that the 355 should shoot 335 fps with 400gr and 331 with 425gr, so it sounds like something is a little off with the OP's bow.
