Big buck
In the tree stand at 6:30 this morning.About 6:45 - 6:50 a.m. I her walking behind and to the right of me. I am brand new at this dear hunting, and have not hunted in 25 years. So I sit as still as I can, then I see the nice size rack come into view. He putters and grazes a bit, about 25 yards in front of me. Pull up the Exomax, but it is still too dark to really see him well. He wanders off a bit then comes in even closer. Still just too dark, and with my lack of experience, I decide not to shoot. All I needed was about 5 more minutes to give me a little extra light and I could have made the shot. I have heard about getting buck fever, but that didn't happen. Just want to make a responsible clean shot. Hope this is the correct thing to do.

Re: Big buck
Waiting for the perfect shot you are comfortable with and being confident in your own ability and limitations is absolutely the right thing to do. Good for you in making the right decision. ......so what happened? Don't leave us hangin.

Re: Big buck
I just watched him wander away, going out later today, we'll see what happens. But I want a good clean shot, Don't want to start with a bad experience for me and the dear.

Re: Big buck
I know that must have been hard to do, but that was a wise choice. Just wounding a deer and then not finding it would be a crappy first deer hunt.

Re: Big buck
If you're not 100% sure of the shot it's best to pass on it. You did the right thing!

Dale - kudos on making the right decision! It takes more nerve to pass on a possible shot, than to risk it. GOOD FOR YOU!
Hope you get another chance at that big boy soon.
