Controlled hunt 2014

Post by Doe Master »

As mentioned by others , this has been a very strange year . Solar charts were calling for fantastic rut activity . :?
Monday produced only one shot heard .
The rest of the week was almost the same . When we went out to the truck . Any one stopping were all saying the same . WTF
On Friday I was the only one that we heard shoot . Then yesterday which normally is constant volley of shooting was as quiet as a church . Where we hunt is field upon field of standing corn .
That being said . To the story . :)
On Thursday my brother had a glimpse of a buck going through the woods . But could not convince him to come over for a look at the sweet thing beckoning him . :)
So Friday we went in with a plan . If he decided to skirt around Scott again he might pass within distance for me . Unfortunately the buck did not read the plan . :?
Around 9:00 I called Dad and Scott to check-in . Dad was saying something when I heard a faint snap . I looked over my left shoulder and there he was not 20 yards from me . What seemed like hours he moved inch by inch . Stopped to scratch an itch on his butt with his antler . About this time a helicopter is approaching very low and LOUD !! He looked up at the sound with no alarm , then took his necessary step forward . I don`t think he even heard the shot . :)
He ran only 40 yards and luckily right towards the trail before he perished .
He was stinky with rut . After field dressing we checked his stomach and he was right full of corn .
He doesn`t have a lot of points but he was a very good sized body . :)

At 75 years young Dad posing for a picture . :)

My brother/Closeup doing some hauling . It is good to have family out hunting . My nephew/ his son made it out for a couple of days .

Dad resting his legs for a posed shot .

Our traditional toast after a successful day . :D

Even though we did not get a bunch of deer it was a very successful week off with family . And family is all that matters . :D

Kevin and Old Buck, it is always a pleasure to see your hunting photos with your Dad and family. Congrats.

Last week I taught my Dad (79) to handle Patti's Matrix 380, it is the first time he shot a crossbow and we will spent the week together hunting the peak of the rut. I can't wait till tomorrow.

Congrats!

The rut is on as it starts at the same time every year. I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar you guys were seeing less activity because the deer are in the corn and will be until it's harvested and/or hunter pressure tapers off.

Standing corn is a deer hunters worst enemy...

Awesome job! I only got out twice this week and nothing though I did hear shots both mornings. Way to much corn still up though I think in your case there's nothing but coyotes in that bush.
