Broardhead reports

Post by kd8jgu »

I am trying to start this thread for peoples experience with different broadheads
I don't want a b*tch match on which one is better
I have used
Bolt cutters 150grain had good results 9 deer with 2 hogs
Magnus Stinger buzzcutts 150 grain 6 hogs only problem was keeping them sharp
Switched up to 100 grain for use with both xbow and compound
Magnus Stingers and Buzzcutts several hogs straight Stingers no problem Buzzcutt keeping sharp
NAP Blood runner 100grain last hogs I have droopped and one doe had some issues with shooting thru mess in blind will say have had the best blood trails
I picked some Hartcraft Wide Cut tuned arrows today with them will start hunting with them tomorrow will update as I go along

Please list the broadheads you have used with your thoughts, problems Lets try to keep this informative
May my aim be true and my arrow fly straight

I have used; Slick Trick standards 125gr, Rocket Steelheads 100gr, Rocket Ultimate Steel 125gr, Magnus Buzzcuts 4bld 125gr, Rage 100gr and now have settled on the Rocket Ultimate Steel heads for the foreseeable future..

They will all work when place in the right spots, the only issue I had was predeployment of the Rage this fall on a nice buck. Last time I will ever use them.. These were older rage heads that someone gave me and didn't have the shock collar, which people say stopped this issue, I don't know but I won't be trying them to find out.... Too many other good heads that never fail to go back and try something that already did....

Using the innerloc exp mechanical's and having good luck. Not looking for blood trail's just following. furthest retrieve so far is around the 90-100 yd mark.

Used Magnus Stinger 2 blade 150gr on a hog and bison. Very tough and easy to resharpen. Blade is replaceable if you have to.

Used Swhacker 100gr (green) on 2 deer. One pass through one not (on small NC deer too). I felt the quality was poor so they are gone. Blades trashed after shot.

Shot a bison and 1 deer so far with Montec CS 100gr. Great head, flies very very well, and super tough. One went through a bison rib and looked perfect still. Pass through on a deer this year (front of shoulder slightly qtr to, front lungs) but no blood trail. Plan to try them on a few more deer and see wht kind of blood trails I get before I make the final call. A weak bloodtrail would be the only downfall. With 60 degree angles, they just are not as sharp as other heads.

6 deer so far with Slick Trick Magnums. Great blood trails on 4 of the 6. Blood started at the shot and was continuous to the deer. On the other 2, one hit was hard qtr to shot that exited behind the diaphragm and the intestine poked out blocking the hole. Deer went 50 yds so no worries. The other one was a spine hit from a treestand so it dropped on the spot. Definitely my go-to head. Fly great and also super tough. Blades come scary sharp and hold up well to deer, bone, trees, and mud. Also just by changing ferrules but using the same blades you can have anything from a 100gr to a 150gr head.

Shot Rage 3 blade 100g with my Barnett Quad 400 and had NO issues,

Upon going to Excalibur late 2013:

Boltcutters

and 100G Spitfires no issues....

probably will try the Spitfires and others with the Micro 335....

My go to head is the Trophy Ridge (Rocket) Sidewinder 100gr. It flies like a field point and has never deployed early. The long ultra sharp point guarantees it will never deflect, but I have broken multiple of the points off after hitting heavy bone as it exits the opposite shoulder. This didn't affect performance as all the deer bled very well and were easily recovered.
Image

Hammerheads (100 gr): Devastating on target performance. Make sure your bands are new/fresh, or double band them at very high speeds. The blood trails are downright amazing. Potential negative: The blades almost reach the tip so deflection on highly angled impacts is more of a possibility than with some other heads. Ground blind hunters not shooting through mesh, this is your broadhead.

Cabela's EXP 3-blade (100gr): I tried an inexpensive pack of these this year. Shot a doe and she made it about 60 yards. Blood was less than I expected, but that was more likely a function of the armpit exit. Negative: The back edge of the blades is curved. If they deploy with enough force out of a faster bow, the curved portion will crack/dent your arrow shaft in 3-places. You save money on broadheads at the expense of arrows.
Image

Rage 3-blade (100 gr): My review is the older version without shock collars. The on target performance was just as advertised. No deer hit with them (>6) had traveled more than 60 yards. Blood trails have been outstanding. Negative: I wouldn't reuse them. The blades will deploy so fast on high speed bows that the blades will put a dent in the blade channel on the ferrule. That's fine on the initial shot, but it can prevent individual (or all) blades from deploying if it is shot again. There is a reason they come with a practice head. When you shoot the real head, its done in my book. ImageAnother Negative: The blades are easily knocked loose from the seating band. If you fail to notice one was bumped loose, a premature deploy of that blade could occur. The collars could help this.

I would buy any of the heads above again except the EXP and even it has good terminal performance as long as you don't mind buying an arrow for each shot.

I have been bow hunting for 14y and taken most of my deer with the four heads below.

Muzzy 3-Blade 100gr 1 3/16" cut
-very sharp heads with good penetration on 3 deer this year. All died within sight of the stand but blood trails were scarce...but when you see them fall I guess it doesn't matter much.

Montec G5 100gr
-I prefer the CS to the standard head because the carbon steel is much sharper. I find regular montecs too dull. Good results with both, killed many deer over the years with this head. I like that they're resharpenable and very solid, they won't come apart on shoulder hits. I once put a Montec through both shoulders of a very stout buck.

Magnus Snuffer SS
-similar in design and performance to the Montecs, but much sharper out of the box and they come with a lifetime warranty. If they bend, break or won't hold an edge, Magnus replaces them for free.

Rage 2-blade, 2" cut
-I used these effectively for a few years. Great blood trails and short recoveries. Then one opened prematurely on a nice deer, despite being banded, and I swore off mechanicals as a result. I have to admit though, I really like what I've seen and heard from FOC users and I might have to try them next year.
