Vets Day Buck

Post by MJK »

The last few days I've been seeing signs of the Rut, trees rubbed, and small scrapes popping up, but only seeing lone does or small groups of 2 or 3. The last buck I saw was on October 4th the first day bucks where legal. I let him walk because it was the the first day and he was a small 6 pointer. I've been out every single afternoon 7 days a week since October 4th and have not seen another buck. Well today I headed out to a spot that historically has always been a great spot, most years I see deer every time I sit there, but this year because the oak trees didn't have acorns the deer weren't coming around. I climbed up got situated and looked around to see antlers! I could see he was an 8 pointer and he was dogging a doe. I watched him mount her three times then she went into some real thick stuff and I lost track of her. He went in after her and started rubbing a tree. Then after what seemed like hours, she came busting out and went away from me and I figured that was it he was gonna follow her and I wasn't gonna get a shot. Well I was wrong as he took a trail out that came down to my left side. I had cut a few shooting lanes in that thick stuff last year so when he walked into the 27 yard lane I let him have it. A perfect double lung shot. He bolted or tried to and went about 10 yards. It's so cool when you don't have to track them and get to see them go down for the count. Two shots in two years and two dead bucks with my Excalibur, gotta love that.Image
