Whitetails are remarkable "machines"
Not really crossbow related....but had an interesting hunting day yesterday. It was opening day for firearm season in VA, so I was out with my 12 gauge slug gun....er, I mean my Mossberg 500 crossbow with rifled 24" rail. I was shooting Federal Premium 500 grain broadheads. Chronied at 1420 FPS...but I am sure that I could get to the advertised 1500 FPS if I used Flemish gunpowder.
Anyway, end of the day a nice doe come in for a nice easy 50-60 yard open field shot. I take the shot, aiming for vitals rather than shoulder. She bolts about 50 feet, then makes a sharp left turn right toward me, goes about 20 more feet, and drops...but writhes on the ground for 3-5 seconds before stopping. Then....about 5 seconds later, another 3 second round of writhing. I felt lousy and was a bit surprised since I knew it was a clean shot.
When I got to her, there was blood everywhere. Small entry woundright behind the right shoulder, HUGE exit wound toward the rear of the left shoulder.
Upon field dress and autopsy, I found that the slug had gone right through the heart and practically tore it in half. I mean, TORE it. Plus massive tissue damage to both shoulders....not at all what you see from a broadhead. But what amazed me was how far she ran and how long she writhed with her heart destroyed. I thought that was supposed to be a "drop em on the spot" shot.

I shot a doe at 40 yards with a 12 Gauge Slug, blew her out out in pieces, one was stuck to a tree behind, it was the size of a tangerine. She pumped three times, but ran 80 yards! No heart left really to speak of, amazing is right on there!

They can do amazing things. I've noticed with archery they will almost always make it to heavy cover when shot in the open. I've made good double lung hits on deer that were right next to heavy cover and deer that were many yards from heavy cover. Almost all of them ran only far enough to get to the heavy cover, then stopped and went down soon after stopping. Some went less than 30 yards, and some went well over 100 yards.

Very though animals indeed.
I've shot a deer that flipped over from a double lung heart shot. That cartridge was a 338-06 A-Square loaded with 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet. Complete penetration at 125 yards and all I saw was white belly after the shot never moved from the spot.
My daughter uses a 223 Remington with a 60 grain Nosler Partition and she's shot 4 deer so far and some dropped at the shot and some ran. Her farthest shot was 70 yards and closest was 25 yards. All were dead on their feet, but proves not all deer react the same.

Yes, deer are incredibly tough and no two shot instances are alike.
Anyone that blames equipment, especially broad heads, after deer travel a long distance, should make sure to read about your experience.

....next time try some LIGHTFIELD Broadheads....they should drop them on the spot...I have changed to them an know a bunch of guys who use them around houses where they don't want the deer dying on someone's front lawn....
LIGHTFIELD Broadheads...and you don't need rubber bands or dental floss!

Re: Whitetails are remarkable "machines"
I agree completely about the complaining about broadhead performance on deer that travel 150 yards. When deer can run like that on heart shots with shotgun slugs, of course they will run the same or further from an arrow. The only deer I've ever dropped were either hit in the spine or high shoulder(which probably broke the spine or jarred it severely enough to momentarily paralyze them until they bled out). Great shot and congrats.

LIGHTFIELD broadheads are my goto head when I use my Mossberg 500 crossbow. It's actually a 20ga youth model, which handles wonderfully in the brush. Needs a TTT though.

I had the exact same thing happen with a doe Saturday after being hit with a 168 gr 30-06 and she still ran about 100 yards with a massive blood trail.

Re: Whitetails are remarkable "machines"
I had a deer heart shot with a round ball from my .50 flintlock at 25 yards that ran over 100 yards on a dead run....then I had a deer shot with same gun at 30 yards a bit high over the heart and touched no bones, with a perfect .50 round hole shot in between two ribs and out the other side the same way between two ribs that dropped in it's tracks with no hole in the hearts just a high hit in the lungs ....go figure huh ??....
