GreyHawk thumped 6 pt. Pic's

Post by vixenmaster »

Oh what a season it has been fer me. I passed a better 6 pt the 1st day of Firearms season. This is the final day & it was the only deer i saw. Abit after 7am this decent 6 pt came by, same spot the last Doe was at. I said oh this is a gimmy, i cocked my ML had a musket cap on it. I pulled the trigger n cap goes off the charge of 75grs pushing a patched roundball doesn't! :( I dig in my coat pocket got my other cap n got it on. The Buck had run about 25 yds n was makin his way up throught the thicket. He is angled away from me i drop the hammer on him, cap goes off n third of second the powder charge goes off. Needless to say the Buck isn't in same spot, i hit abit back from where i aimed but it angled forward an hit the left front shoulder going thru. He dropped on the spot, all the smoke around me i didn't see him drop. I was looking fer a runnin deer, then i see him kick a few times on the ground, pic's will follow. This is the 16th deer i have saw during the season so fer n my 5th kill. I gave 3 of the 4 to needy ppl. today were the needy one's. I am keepin most of this one. I have only 2 permits left & when i go to town i will purchase my last Bonus Doe permit fer Archery.
This will be the last deer or any other game i kill wid me GreyHawk. I am going to sell or trade it along wid 2 more of my older T/C caplocks. I am going to go the H & R conversation 45-70 set up usin smokeless powder. So i will sell or trade my 3 to get one. :)

Nice job and thanks for helping the needy. That's never a bad thing. I dropped #6 on Saturday (another doe) and am making a delivery to the food bank tomorrow. And absolutely nothing wrong with keeping this one. "Don't muzzle the ox as it treads out the grain."

Congrats on the deer. The NY muzzleloader season starts in a few weeks. I have more confidence in the shot gun primer in my 50 cal optima than I ever did in my old TC using the caps.

Congratulations on the buck!

What powder were you using in the T/C?
I have a NewEnglander .50 and a NewEnglander 12ga. The same gun as the GreyHawk, but blued.
The .50 has never given me any problems, but the 12ga only likes real BP. I finally switched to a replacement nipple that uses 209 primers for the 12ga. It was working fine with #11 caps & ffg Goex, but I just feel more confident it's going to go boom every time with a 209 primer.

That's great news------if you are going to smokeless powder be sure to check out
the Savage model 10ml-II with accutrigger. It has some unique features.
