new 380 vs 405?

Post by Bayouhunter »

which would you get? It will be used for deer hunting. I like more power and speed but found pretty good deal on ebay for the 380 package for less 900$.

I have the M380 and can tell you that both bows are wayyyy more than you NEED for deer. I love my bow for hunting and 3D but I'm still considering a 405 just for hunting because I love the extra speed and power. I think the 405 would probably be out of the question for 3D shooting as my M380 seems to be about as much as the targets can handle. That being said, if you just want a hunting bow with all the power you can muster, the 405's for you. If you want a powerful bow for just target shooting, 3D, and hunting, the 380's for you. Both bows are equally accurate.

Like Paul said the 405 is the way to go for hunting if you want raw speed and power. I have both and the 405 is harder to cock but brings a smile to my face when I pull the trigger on a deer and briefly see the scope dot and Luminok intersect with deadly results.

I just got off the phone with a friend who owns the 405 and his wife the 330. For all around pleasure to shoot the 330 in the house gets the nod every time he says.

I went back and forth for several months on the very same decision you are trying to make. I had a Exomax for several years and liked it but wanted a Matrix for its smaller profile. I drew a 405 and a 380 and really didn't see/feel much difference. I finally decide on the 380 and love it. I really don't even question my decision now. 380 will do anything you want it to do and I can still cock it while on my treestand platform. The 405 is a awesome bow but honestly so is the 380. I mean if the arrow is blowing right through a deer with the 380 at 50 yds what more can you hope for? In my opinion the 380 is a perfect balance of raw power/accuracy/ and shootability. With the money you save buy a Trigger Tech 2.5 Hunter trigger and don't look back. Good luck with your decision.

I don't care for the scope or the arrows in that package but its a good price and you WILL be upgrading anyway. :D

I own both. Power isn't an issue, but the 405 is flatter shooting. With 406g arrows, there is 30'/sec difference. The trajectory difference really shows up from 70-100 yds. If not interested in shooting farther than 70 yds, I think the 380 has the nod; otherwise, the 405 does. I always take the 405. The 380 is the back up.

I to went back and forth and decided on the 380.
I also use for hunting and if it's just about the speed...
380 fps @ 40 yrds = .3157 seconds
405 fps @ 40 yrds = .2962 seconds

Are you going to notice .0195 difference at 40 yards?

Can you go to a shop and shoot both bows? I would try to find a place to shoot both bows and that should really narrow down your choice. I had my heart set on an Equinox crossbow when I was first getting into crossbows. I went to the archery shop and shot one then I seen a Vortex hanging there and decided to try it. I ended up going with the Vortex.

Again, trajectory from yds and beyond is the factor to me. There is a significant 60/70-100 yd difference. If 40-50yds were my max range, I'd own a Mini.
