Leupold vx vs vxr

Post by archerytho »

I am looking to upgrade my scope on my axiom, I want a duplex reticule because I will use a HHA dial. My Question is, is the illuminated dot worth it? and is the dot large because it will be used for long distance shooting.

And Im looking at the vx1 3-9 40mm and the vxr1 3-9 40mm

Any opinions and answers will be appreciated

I've got the VX-R with the ballistic firedot reticle. Absolutely worth it. I also use the HHA Optimizer and play at extended ranges out to 110 yards. The dot is perfect. The illuminated dot allows for faster target acquisition and I've shot six animals so far and love it, especially at last/first light.

Check optics planet. I bought the 3-9×40 instead of the 2-7×33 (which I would've preferred ) because it was a much better price and I was still getting the same quality and features. Keep a couple things in mind, even though my scope looks big it's still lighter than say....a tac zone.....and this is a lifetime purchase. The extra dough over twenty or thirty years doesn't seem too bad. Don't get me wrong, I felt sick spending that money. Then I felt sick spending the hundred bucks on the alumicap scope covers. In the end,I'm so glad I did...once I got over the shell shock.

They are both quality scopes, but especially if your target shooting might include competitions or tournaments, in the long haul you won't regret spending the extra dough. Where in the world does a VXR costs that much?

My 380 & 405 is set up like 'racking up points' s. I have Zeiss Duralyt 2-8 lighted. These are great scopes but comparison with VXR 2-7 shows the scopes to be about the same optically and lighted reticle qualities. I found the VXR on Amazon for $480 a few months ago (for a friend of mine). The VXR 2-7 seems to be the most cost effective scope for Optimizer usage. Just have to see it to believe it.

Hey Derrick, believe it. I saw the VX-R at a local shop for $850-899. I think I bought mine on Amazon from Optics Planet. Archerytho, my shooting is probably 98% target and 3D. I know you'd like us to tell you to save the extra money because the difference is minimal but that's just not the case. Sorry, but the VX-R with the ballistic firedot reticle gets my vote.

what about comparing the vx1 series. The 33mm vs the 40mm vs 50mm is 40mm a happy medium?

Today's VX-R glass matches or slightly exceeds the Leupold 2002+ era VX-III glass and the VX-R glass sits between the current VX-2 and VX-3 optical quality of glass.
The 2-7 VX-R is hands down the finest glass that has ever graced any of my Excalibur's and like Paul said, the Firedot is very fine and can be used successfully in all situations. This scope is here to stay!
I purchased mine from Optics Planet for $420 (online price match and received another 5% off my total).
Aluminum 30mm Leupold Rifleman rings are highly suggested since they are manufactured with Leupold's latest CNC equipment and offered at a great price.

Unfortunately I found the vx1 3-9 40mm for $395 and the cheapest I can get the vxr in any size is $710.
Im sure the vx1 will be better than the smf scope I have.
Thanks for all the help
