Hunting in the snow?

Post by Riflemanz »

What's easier using a deer cart or ice fishing sled to get your deer out in about 8" of snow?

I've been using a sled for years works great with or without snow, slides over most small deadfall. works great to two man lift deer into the back of a truck, ect. just easier then trying to two man lift a deer by the legs into the back of the truck.

Cabelas has one just as you describe Bob, they call it the Deer Slayer. You can cinch it up around the deer, and tether it to your harness. Around $35.

Sled.

251 lbs on the hoof solo dragged 5/8 mile in 40 minutes:

260 lbs of doe solo dragged 1/4 mile through a swamp in 20 minutes

120 lbs of doe solo dragged 1 mile in 45 minutes

I use a fall arrest harness with a big D-ring in the centre of my back hitched to a 6 or 7 foot lead on the sled. Allows you to pull equally with your legs, hips, back and shoulders.

another item that works well is a plastic tarp.
Drags real easy in the snow.
Also the deers head won't flop over the side, and the tarp won't tip over when in slides in your tracks

I have a Jet Sled XL. Doubles as an Ice Fishing sled and deer hauler. It's 66" L, 31"W and 12"H sides. Deer stuff nicely inside it, nothing hangs out except the legs. I can, by myself, load this sled with a deer in it onto my high 2500 Ram by raising the forward end of it onto the tailgate and getting around to the back of it, lifting it up and sliding it into the box. You have to tie the deer in, at the head , with the pull rope, otherwise it will slide to the bottom of the sled when you raise it up on the tailgate.

Man you lucky!! If we had that here I could ice fish in the morning, and deer hunt in the evening! With the same sled! :D ....but Michigans deer herd would suffer. Bad DNR, too many idiots shooting young deer. Spike city on the opener in town at lunch break..sad
