I wonder how this would do on the rail

Post by hotdog »

I seen this and thought it might do pretty good on the rail and arrows to help get them out of some targets. I've seen where some use rail lube, and just thought this might do pretty good. What do you guys think?

I've tried 3M teflon tape and silicone spray's with no noticeable difference in bolt speed. I don't think the string and the rail create enough friction, to warrant a lubricant, but that is not to say the silicone won't protect the rail, by reducing wear, plus it will certainly help to keep it clean.

What affect if any will the silicone have on the string life?
Just wondering, as I know certain chemicals will break down the string fibers, and other chemicals will coat the string without being absorbed. Most lubricants are made from petroleum, and some forms of petroleum will cause the fibers and wax to degrade. I use just regular string wax on the string and serving but nothing on the rail. I do clean the rail with a dry rag but am hesitant to use WD40.
I know WD40 works well to clean the wax from the rail...
(WD40 will clean almost anything) But is it because it causes the wax to break down and then be easily wiped off? Will a coating of WD40 also prevent wax from being absorbed by the string and reduce string life?
I know wiping the rail dry will help prevent this, but any residue left on the rail will be absorbed by the string.

Just my thoughts

What I did to prevent contamination, I sprayed a cloth and applied it to the rail, rather then just spraying it directly to the rail. I didn't want silicone all over everything. Once it's dry there should be no issue with it affecting the string.

I cant see it hurting much, as long as wiped dry. I think it would be better than rail lube. Some have said jigaloo or some thing works good also.

Archoil AR2400 on the rail. A dry lube that bonds to the metal and is really slick.

I would like to try the product Keith made reference to.

I have a full bottle of jig-a-loo for the time being and it is great. I apply it to the rail and my arrows using a microfibre cloth.

I use a Buck Commander target I bought last fall for around 30.00 and the arrows pull out easily with 2 fingers. Around 500 arrows in it and it barely looks used.
Has 5 bullseyes on one side that I normally use,and deer vitals on the other that has only had a half dozen arrows into it.
I think it is stuffed with straw or something.

I've used silicon spray on the rail. Spray on an old sock then wipe the rail. I've chrony tested it and it makes no measureable difference in speed. I have not noticed any adverse effects on strings or servings either. It also make a pretty good arrow lube when shooting at a Rinehart.
