Brace hight line in my micro is chewing up my serving

Post by MCS »

Just a heads up on an observation I made on my micro. On the rail 1/2" before and 1/2" after the brace hight line, there is a blackish mark. A closer look at the brace hight line has serving material in it. When I turned the string 180 degrees. You can plainly see the ware on the serving. I also ran my thumb nail over the line and it is quite sharp. Would like to smooth it out somehow, if any one has any ideas please chime in. Tony will add some pics I took of the rail. Has anyone else had this issue? Have you corrected the problem? If so how. Thanks Mike.

I do get the gummy residue, but have not noticed any wear associated with it. Is the serving wearing the whole width of the rail?

The rail is Aluminum so it's pretty soft. I would think a sharp knife run carefully along that mark would take off any sharpness. Then follow that up with some sort of fine polishing. Stropping compound os some really fine grit paper - like a 10 or 5 micron

Burnishing will be your very best option.

Can you post pictures? You may get by using rail lube.

Explain this Burnishing process please. We Burnish bearing journals on locomotive axles with carbide rollers under extreme pressure to achieve RMS readings less than 5. I also seen burnishing strings by wrapping a piece of material around it, then tightening it, and stroking back and forth to create a rough surface for serving bite.
This is new to me! :?:

Here us how i took what Don meant. If you took a piece of metal harder then the aluminum and rolled or slid across the brace height mark it would knock it down and smooth it out. Here is a definition courtesy if google.
Burnishing is the plastic deformation of a surface due to sliding contact with another object. Visually, burnishing smears the texture of a rough surface and makes it shinier. Burnishing may occur on any sliding surface if the contact stress locally exceeds the yield strength of the material.
I do what you said with a piece of leather on a string but never to roughen it up, i always do to smoothen t out.

Okay in these pictures you can see I turned the string 180° so it was on top and you can plainly see that it is wearing perfectly where the line goes across the rail. You can also see the material laying in the brace height groove. The walls on that groove are super sharp.

Dang Mike, you ask tough questions! Yep, I see the wear, and what Boo said makes sense. I am probably the only person lubricating my serving these days, but I am not getting that wear, but the gummy residue I am. I just keep that wiped off. I also have a tad more space between string resting spot, and brace mark, maybe an extra 1/8" I'm going to follow you on this thread to see what you try, and what works!

Good Luck!

Tony and I received those strings two weeks ago. We got them from Keith I love the string he did a great job. The serving is tight. There is maybe 25 shots on that string. It should not see that kind of ware. I have to do something with that groove or I'm going to zip through strings quick.
