Cleaned Corn vs Regular Corn for Deer

Post by BryanOney »

A friend of mine says the deer he feds like the cleaned corn from a feed store way better than Walmart cleaned corn or just regular old corn. Anyone ever experience this. I have never baited deer, but am giving it some thought.

Ive picked corn when its hot, sweating like crazy all over then husked them and or used as is, used cleaned corn from various stores. The ONLY corn deer didnt devour was the corn labeled for deer with molasses added. The coons liked it. Use any natural corn they arent picky.

I used to bait/feed corn but as noted the coons love it, plus the birds, squirrels and chipmunks - someday's they didn't leave any for the deer.

For the past couple of years I have gone with a pellet style food (packed as deer feed but think it's just stuff for horses in a different bag) - looks like the pellets you would feed a guinea pig.

Stays on the ground longer and the game camera's only show deer and rabbit's chowing down on it.

We've been buying feed corn from a local farmer when we can get it, or we buy regular feed corn at the co-op. Deer like it, and pigs and coons and everything else. Most of the stuff labeled as "deer corn" at stores costs a lot more and it has lots of bits of chopped up cobs in it as filler so I usually avoid it.

When corn places get it in from the field they usually put it in a blower that removes the dust and bits of husk out. They may put it through 2 or 3 times and call it double cleaned or triple cleaned. One place I buy corn from will then put the dust from the cleaned corn in with the non-cleaned and sell it a little cheaper, but when you pour out a bag you get a pile of corn dust with some kernels mixed in. I always get cleaned corn and the deer love it.

Never knew how much the coons ate until I ran a camera last year that was sensitive enough to take coon pictures all night every night.

Never tried the apple flavored stuff they have at walmart.

Feed my deer and turkeys year round. They don't seem to care if it's clean or not. My florida critters get clean all year long. My Georgia critters get both. Only issue you have with uncleaned corn is that pieces of husk or cobb can clog up a spin feeder. I built a strainer for my 55 gallon drum feeders and that solved that problem. We buy uncleaned corn directly from the farmer at a huge discount. When you buy 3 tons a year, the savings add up. Like the other posters stated, Coons can be a huge pain in the a$$. Once they discover your feeder they will send out notice to all their family members. You will need to build a cage around your feeder unit. I won't even begin to tell you about the hogs.

Man, could get about half a ton of Back Bacon Eh! from that herd.

If we had pigs here I would consider giving up deer hunting - pigs are yummy :D

We hunt corn quite a bit here in SC... the deer could care less if the corn has shucks.

You folks feeding coons w/ corn feeders ought to google a 5 gal bucket feeder w/ a stick hanging out the bottom. You hang it up......

This is what I love about y'all... not one single person has made a smart comment about hunting over corn "not being fair"... this is a good bunch of real hunters that get what it's all about!

Wal, shucks, hang a few buckets, lol. I'd have a PVC feeder cleaned out in much less than a week via coons.
