Broadhead for Moose
Broadhead for Moose
Hey guys, I'm in need of some advise again!
I got lucky with my LEH and I drew a bull moose hunt! Now I really want to use my m405 for this moose but I wasn't anticipating that I'll get to draw a moose hunt since it's my first time hunting.
I have 3 broad heads right now on my arsenal. they are:
125g Toxic
125g QAD Exodus
125g NAP Spitfire Maxxx
Which one should I use to ethically kill a big bull?
Thanks in advance!

#1. QAD Exodus as you may be shooting some distance and they penetrate like gangbusters. Slick Trick, Magnus Buzzcut 4 Blade. Of course Toxics. Gil, I would personally stick with fixed blades. Jmo....and congratulations you lucky s.o.g..

Re: Broadhead for Moose
Kill all mine with G5 Strikers. I would not use any mechanical head on moose, hair/hide is too thick.Rest of my guys are using Excal bolt cutters with great success as well.

Re: Broadhead for Moose
I use g5 strikers on deer and bear. Fly great and very sharp.

355 matrix, big johns arrows- zombieslayers, g5 montecs, strikers. Vortex big johns arrows- zombieslayers g5 montecs 125. Lumenoks.
Re: Broadhead for Moose
I use FOCs, Swhackers, and Spitfires for deer and bear. No lost deer in past 15 years with any expandible(don't like Rages) but wouldn't use Expandible on larger animal (Elk or Moose). So many great fixed. Wouldn't rule out the old, tried and proven 145g Bear Super Razorhead.
Re: Broadhead for Moose
I would echo going with a fixed blade.
The only Moose I have taken with a bow was a 3'ish year old bull (dressed out/quartered/decapitated at about 900 pounds, got just on 400 pounds of meat from the butcher).
I shot him at 15 yards with my recurve. My total arrow weight was about 515 grains and the broadhead was a 125 grain, 3 blade Thunder Head.
I did get a pass through even with a meager arrow speed of about 140 fps, with the wind
but I did break the broadhead - one of the blades was recovered stuck in the near side rib.
Moose are not super tough to kill. Their hides are tough and they are big, but they will usually let you get pretty close.
My concern with a mechanical would be the power required to get them to deploy - you need every ft/lb you can get to get through the hide on both sides.
After that one experience I checked it off my bucket list and went back to doing all my Moose hunting with a rifle. But if I did take a bow on a hunt again I would want a more durable/robust head than what the Thunder Head was.
Something like a 4 blade Eskimo (Zwickey) would be high on my list.
Being a little familiar with the Toxic's (some testing, but no "on game" experience) I might trust that as well - seems like a fairly durable head.

Re: Broadhead for Moose
While I am not as scared to use a good mechanical on a moose but if you want to try a different head give the ramcat a try. They penetrates like no body's business

Re: Broadhead for Moose
I would take along Slick trick 125 grain magnums. And G5 Strikers. And I wouldn't think twice with either one on a Moose at 20 yds. or 50 yds.
On a side note:
I am planning a Moose hunt to Quebec as part of my bucket list. Sure would be nice if a couple guys from here wanted to join in.
I will do all the planning, and have a 26'ft. Travel Trailer in mint condition.
Sorry, don't want to hi-jack thread.

Big John, You didn't say when you were planning this bucket list trip. I'd be interested if it was in the month of November. But not this year, I already have a trip planned.Big John wrote:I would take along Slick trick 125 grain magnums. And G5 Strikers. Re: Broadhead for Moose
I need to modify my statement. I wouldn't use the expandibles I'm using on moose. The rear opening expandibles might be a different matter.SEW wrote:I use FOCs, Swhackers, and Spitfires for deer and bear. My expandibles use a lot of energy going in, but I have way more than enough - for WTs and black bear.
Re: Broadhead for Moose
I would use the 150 grain Excal Bolt Cutters(fixed blade)broadhead with an Easton Aluminum arrow.Check the Easton chart for the heaviest weight arrow.More than likely you won't be shooting past 40 yards. This set up will give you a clean pass through shot with plenty of blood for tracking if the moose didn't expire quickly. My opinion is penetration far out weighs speed of the arrow.I'm not a big fan of carbon arrows on big game such as moose, also on game like boar.Just a personal opinion.Good luck on the draw and hunt.
Re: Broadhead for Moose
Thanks all! Looks like I'll be sticking with fixed for moose.
Paul how confident are you that the toxic would do enough damage to cleanly kill a moose?

Re: Broadhead for Moose
I think it's dependent on how far you're shooting. Forty, fifty yards broadside with your beast , no problem. Further, I don't know and don't want to pretend I do. If you're free later next week maybe we'll take a run out to my club and do some testing?gmac405 wrote:Thanks all! Looks like I'll be sticking with fixed for moose.
