Hunting setup!!

Post by WVbowhunter »

Ok so im trying to figure out a good whitetail setup. Right now i have gold tip nitro 20 inch 278grains. 90grain brass inserts, 18 grain blazer vanes, I have 25 grain allum flat nocks, and 125 garin broadhead. By the gold tip calculator that would put me at 520 grains with foc of 16.17. Ok my question is will this setup be to slow for 30-35 yd shots max, 35 yd would have to be at a buck in full rut that couldnt care less if i was there or not lol. should i go with 100 garin broadheads and plastic nocks to gain some aarow speed? If i go with 9 grain plastic nocks and stat with 125 grain broadheads goes to 504 and foc goes to 18%. What you think? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like a deep penetrating hunting rig to me ! I think you'll be fine . Shoot it through a Meter for the speed results . If your setup gives you repeatable accuracy and you have confidence in it , Use it regardless of the speed .

Personally that's to much weight for me, but then its really up to you and what you want. I shoot arrows from 365 grain up to 390 grain with my ibex and 355 matrix. using 100 to 125 grain broadheads. And stay right around the advertised speeds of both bows. As long as you stay over 350 f.ps. the book says you will be ok. Every one has there preferences........

I like them around 370 to 400 grains total, and as short as I can get them with the accuracy I want out to 50 yards. Some folks like the heavy bolts, and do well with them.

Will they reach out to 35 yds ? They certainly will, but yer set-up should be around the 300 fps area. I have shot many of tick toters wid arrows weighing 625 gr.

You have a 92 gr insert, why not 100 gr b-heads, you'ld chop off 25 gr right there.

I use BEE 20" same insert and vanes for 400 gr [total] w/ 100 gr point. Shot out of a Y-25 @ 310 [or so] fps.

I shot a 1000 lb cow buff at 20-25 yds w/ a 446 gr arrow, passed thru her, fwiw.....

Thanks guys with the setup i am shooting very tight groups alot of ragged holes at 20 yds. I am gonna start moving out to 30 with more trigger time and getting used to xbows. This bow will be used for hunting whitetail and im not comfortable shooting any deer beyond 30 yds with archery equipment. Ive never hunted with xbow and was wonderin how deer react to the sound? So my question was geared to performance in the field. ive taken alot of game with vertical bows and i have had some to jump the string.

I have only been crossbow hunting for around 6 years so I'm no expert. However I like the plastic flat nocks and Blazer vanes as they really help lighten the rear of the arrow and that helps increase FOC weight. Personally I think arrows right around or at 400 gr give the perfect combination of speed, penetration, and accuracy out of my 380 Matrix and previous Exomax. JMO

As others have stated that set up is definitely good for the yardage you are talking get about (35 yds). The arrows I shot the previous season were 382 gns. But the arrows I am currently building are 391. For me an arrow in the 370-400 gns give the good compromise of speed and weight, but as always there are many opinions, if you feel confident and accurate with your set up you are good to go. Good luck
