Shipping a scope from the US to Canada

Post by Shadytree »

So I have someone who wants to buy my tact zone. Thing is he is in Canada and I am in the US. Anybody had any problems with customs? I had an antique Brno rifle stock seized by US customs once. It did not turn out well. They destroyed it. I want to avoid another incident.

I know rifle scopes need a permit in order to be exported out of the US. Not sure if the same stands for crossbow scopes.

As far aas I know, gun scopes (same as a crossbow scope) need an "Export Permit" from Homeland Security. I believe that it is the same permit you should of had for the gun parts (your stock).

A few years ago. The US Customs ceased one of Agings' custom crossbow stocks and it was a huge ordeal to get it back. They did after they were able to prove it was for a crossbow and could not be used for a gun.

Takes forever to clear Customs. Yeas back I sold a V-zone to a Canadian and have some experience.

I didn't include any 'special' paper work, just listed it as "archery eqip" on declarations form.....YMMV

I really don't get what the problem is since almost all the scopes sold in Canada have to be imported!!!!
This may have more to do with marketing than anything else.

This is not an import problem with Canada Customs, but an export problem with US Homeland Security.

There is NO PROBLEM with Canada Customs. You can bring scopes in and as long as you declare a value so they can tax you. The issue lies with U.S. Homeland Security. They don't want any scopes leaving the U.S..

As already said, the Canadian Govt does not care, this is an American Export law, Home Land Security will be all over you if you were to get caught, and the fine is huge from what I understand, ask Cabela's, almost 10 yrs ago they got fined over a half million bucks for shipping to Canada without the proper Export permit.
You will find lots of people who have done it and not gotten caught, but believe me when I say it's not worth the chance.

All right then, the question becomes, what's the cost of an export permit??

It's the same law that prevents you from bringing ammo back from the US. Permits are very expensive, getting caught without one costs even more.

Like Tim said, these permits are expensive, definitely not something you do to ship one scope, this is why the big box stores no longer ship these items across the border, to much coin for the permits.
