Hunting when raining

Post by MickB »

Hi Guys,
How do Excalibur strings and the bows themselves handle being directly rained on- is it okay to use and fire them in heavy rainfall?

Scope gets dribbled on, bow is good, string is fine, I'm wet! Rub a little wax into the string, treat fasteners with a a rub of WD-40 from a paper towel, or rag, keep scope caps flipped down, and wear rain gear. Good luck. I have killed my share of wet deer, they live in that crap!

As said above.

I've hunted in continuous rain and drizzle for over 5 hours with my bow. Quality rain gear, cotton Q-tips in a zippy to clear the scope glass from the rain or fog once in a while when it gets wet, then wd-40 at the end of the hunt.. I also use compressed air to blow out the trigger area afterwards too.The string will be ok.

After the season ends, it is a good idea to break it all down though and clean off all the bolts, or go all titanium fasteners at some point.

The only concern I have and try to prevent is moisture finding its way inside the arrow shaft through the nock. For that reason I make sure the arrow I use during rain situations are sealed solid nocks. The threaded puller type nock are great for target shooting but are just too risky when it comes to damp hunting situations.
It does not take much moisture to throw off your expected poi .

Using a q tip and Vaseline you can cover the head of all your fasteners. They won't rust that way. The Vaseline estays soft even sub zero and if you need to remove it or the fastener it's simple. Stays on for a good while too. Every bow and gun I hunt with gets Vaseline on the fasteners and then thoroughly cleaned and dried after wet hunts.

if you don't address the fasteners with some type rust preventive you will end up with a rusty mess.

I dont hunt in the rain. Rain will wash away the blood trail and that is the only link to your deer. :x Of course if the deer goes down within sight no problem! :D

My feelings also. A light rain ok but if it gets a little heavy it's a no go.

Best of luck

I live in a true Rain Forest.
If you don't hunt the rainy days here, you won't be hunting many days at all.

Just sayin...
