Up, down, or round and round?

Post by hankenhunter »

Hi all. This question is for the free hand shooters on the forum. When aiming at your target, do you slowly lower your crosshairs to impact point, slowly raise to impact point or do you do the crosshair dance till the crosshairs touch the sweet spot. I raise to impact point. Discuss please. :D

I do the crosshair dance until I settle down and then touch her off when it's where I want it.
The crosshair dance gets more frantic proportionately with the size of the rack on the deer.

In all honesty it sometimes feels like I'm doing the MakaRena. It gets the job done though

i just got done shooting a 3D coarse with my boys. the first 10 targets i just put it on and pulled the trigger. after that i tried the circle dance with limited success. then i started bringing it up and timing the trigger. this worked a little better.
but in the end one of the boys beat my by one point with his vertical bow.

Ha! I agree that the dance is directly proportional to antler size or lack of.

I can hold on pretty steady. My body will be still. My heart on the other hand, gives the crosshairs a little bump bump bump.. I just calm the mind and pull between beats. Works fer me.

I come down to the POI, ans squeeze off the shot. My reasoning is that you tend to reverse your motion unintentionally, so by coming down with the weight of the gun, or crossbow you may hit a bit higher, this is usually better when hunting.

I'm like Xcaliber. I pretty well always line up left and right above my target, then drop down into it. Trigger timing (those TT triggers really help with this IMO) such that the bow goes off just when it crosses the "Sweet Spot".

Done this with rifles for may many years. No reason to change with the bow.

When it's a critter involved, I force myself to FOCUS on one small patch of critter right where I need the shot to go, and basically ignore the rest of it. Works for me... although can be a tad tough if there's any significant headgear attached!

.....I slowly drop down into the target, squeeze and the shot is off... This has worked for me!

....the reason why i do this is simple...bringing the bow down is a natural movement of the arms and requires less energy...Lifting them up to the target requires more energy...at least that is how I see it!

I've always been a guy who starts high and settles down to my target, even with my vertical compound.
