Wet arrow lower impact?

Post by GROOTSKY »

Last night I was shooting for the first time in the rain. My arrow was impacting about 3" lower than normal @ 30yards consistently. I then switched to a dry arrow and I was back up the 3". Could the extra weight from the rain & the moisture on the fletchings cause this. This was using the Firebolt arrows. Thanks

I have practiced shooting my Excalibur in the rain out to 20 yards and never noticed any POI change at that yardage.

I was good to 20 but at 30 I noticed the difference

Sometimes the cause is moisture / rain droplets entering inside the arrow shaft thru threaded hole located in rear nock
Which results in increase weight hence the lower POI.

Remove broadhead / field point and blow air inside shaft to remove any moisture buildup if present.

Interesting...good answer, makes sense.

Good Possibility.

I've shot out to 50 yards in the rain (light rain but steady) and seen no apparent influence. Maybe this is the OP's cause for being low...

I thought it might be rain droplets on arrow and excessive moisture on fletchings. I shoot an Axiom so my arrow speed is slower to start with which may be more pronounced than a bow shooting faster speeds?

I've shot in light rain with no problems but I use plastic nocks. However, heavy rain leaves your poi as a question mark. I've shot 3D in a couple West Coast downpours and there looked like an explosion of water off the rail and string and there was a stream of water coming off the arrow that looked like a big fat tracer bullet. Unless I'm in a blind I won't be hunting in that kind of weather, ethically I couldn't do it.

how many extra grains of weight can a few drops of water on an arrow weigh ??....you would need to be carrying your arrows nock side up in a raging down pour to get any water in that tiny nock hole !!....besides when you launched that arrow all the water would stay put as the arrow would be sent down range anyway, being it is not held to the arrow  ....

I went out in a summer downpour to see if there was a major difference and the results were negligible out to 40. But then I was shooting the Equinox so ymmv. I agree with paulaboutform in that the water spray is spectacular. Should have got the wife to video it. Oh well.

I have had major poi change in freezing rain, but that stands to reason

Liquid Rain: not so much
