newbie with a question

Post by edstuff »

Hello all. I've seen in a few different threads where people filled their rails with foam. What is the main purpose of this? Does it quiet vibration? And is there a specific foam you use or does that not matter?

The best foam is the kind from which ear plugs are made.

It's only effective if installed in your ear (if you are bothered by the sound of firing), and, if installed in the ears of the deer (if you want to prevent the deer from hearing you shoot).

Seriously.

I do nothing to my xcals to suppress noise...... some people just use what ever spray foam inside the rail to help vibes/noise

I used to foam fill the longer Exo series mainframes with foam which made a slight reduction in resonance. Todays shorter Matrix and Micro mainframes don't really need foam filling the way I see it.

Ahh OK. I was already leaning towards not doing it just because I didn't want to deal with the excess. But if you're saying it really does no good anyway then all the more reason to leave well enough alone.

Just wait till they get wet and add weight, then start to stink. When I used to foam fill my longer mainframes I added non scent wax to each end to end to create a seal against moisture.
