Canting your xbow to shoot

Post by excalxbowner »

Is this doable? I've been hunting off the ground and will be up in a tree the next time i hunt. Canting my bow may keep one limb from hitting the tree i'm in. it it a less accurate way of shooting?

Yes, but the closer the shot, the less it will be an issue.

Maybe you should think about cutting your shooting lanes instead. :)

As stated by xcalibur... closer ranges won't make much difference. If you are shooting 40 yards though it could drastically affect poi.

It can throw the shot off. I wouldn't recommend doing it

Yes, enough I set my bows up to avoid it,, over 40 yards it can be critical shooting with obstacles around!! This is my Micro and you can see the level vial calibrated and cemented to my riser. Both my 380's have the same setup, Like xcaliber said, the farther you shoot the more critical it becomes!

I've done that.:D I'm talking about getting a shot off when a deer comes in from behind you when on stand and you turn around to shoot it as you face the tree your in. Wish i could explain it better. :(

There are times, but that is what offseason practice is all about. I practice every shot from every position I can imagine. Everything is offhand. 1000's of shots is the only way to know your limitations for sure. But there will be times you have to make compromises, the only way to do that responsibly is practice,,, no your equipment!! The only thing I ever learn of a table or from a rest, is if I got my setup right, everything else requires offhand practice in real field conditions. Good Luck, the more we do that, the better prepared we are,,

Watch the bows limbs and the tree limbs. If the bows limb hits a tree on discharge it WILL leave a mark!! Shame to mess up a pretty face!

It WILL affect your poi...period. As mentioned, the further the shot the more magnified the difference will be and the more so the further you move away from dead level. To satisfy your own curiosity and view the effects for yourself, set up on a bench with a solid rest. Now, cant your bow and put the crosshairs on the bullseye. Now, open both eyes open watch your crosshairs move off the bullseye as you level your bow. What looked like a perfect bullseye will be out by ???? much. That's a great way to see the effects of shooting off level.

For best accuracy the limbs need to be perfectly horizontal. Canting the bow will throw the shot off. The more it's canted the farther you miss.

Canting your bow will surely change your arrow's POI. The longer the shot the further off aim point you will be, I would strongly advise against it at any range. :)

Just like Paul & others have said. It is not a good idea. To cant your bow is like purposly mounting your scope off level.

One thing I learned a long time ago is to learn to shoot both right & left handed to help in situations like this. But, if the bow still can't be held level, or the limbs have a posibility to striking a tree or branch, I let the animal walk for a second chance later.

If you can try this out in the back yard. It will affect POI but at 20 or 30 yds my feeling is not enough to put you out of the kill zone. Just practice it so you know how to compensate a little bit. Things happen fast in the deer woods so you need to be ready.
