olive wood set (knife/deer call)

Post by wabi »

Bought myself a new Olive Wood handle Opinel knife this summer and thought a matching deer call was needed when I found the right turning square. I recently bought some more olive wood to make calls from. When I started turning a piece to see how it looked it had the color to match the knife, plus some really nice grain and character to it, so I decided to make this one for myself!

It will go along with me on my deer hunts as the rut gets closer.

Oh nicely done! Which kit did you use?

If you had a long enough blank, you should of went for an all wood grunter!

Gotta love wood turning!

Post more of your work, there's somebody on this side of the Internet that wants to see more homemade calls!

I don't use a kit, I buy the turning squares, reeds, and other materials used from various suppliers. I've been making deer calls for several years now and have refined some of the methods/materials over the years. I use a piece I turn out of Delrin to hold the reed because it it not affected by moisture. The expandable extension tube varies the sounds produced by being collapsed or extended to various lengths. And the reed can be adjusted for bleats or grunts by the user.
I have a few calls pictured in the "Trading Post" section of the forum.

Great looking set wabi. I really like the grain of olive wood. It's also becoming popular for making tobacco pipes. I have a Damascus knife that I'm thinking of putting olive wood handles on. :)
