baiting deer with sugar
i recently came across a large amount of plain white sugar that was going to be thrown out as it was sitting in a shed for years and was wondering if anyone has tried using sugar as a bait? it would be a shame to throw it out and i doubt it would repel deer but would question it as an attractant. any input appreciated

I don't know of anyone that has baited deer with sugar, but I know they have a sweet tooth! They like apples and there are other deer attractives that have sugar in them.Give it a try if you are allowed to bait deer in your area but you might also attract some ants also! Ron!

Come late season you may need corn more than sugar if you are still hunting.sledhead wrote:yes, i agree, but we're surrounded by corn fields and my stand is on the edge of said field

I have a few pear trees on my property. The deer go out of their way to eat them, bypassing corn feeders on the way.
Honestly, I think they prefer them over Apples.
BTW, I also take them up to the cabin. No pear trees within 50 miles and the deer will eat them all before they touch an apple.

....Wasn't Michelle O'B...on a mission to eliminate all sugar in schools?? ?...maybe some thought "sugar prohibition" was about to start?

Mix the sugar with some corn, boil the mash, catch the vapor and cool. You won't care if the deer like it!

Isn't deercain and all that stuff sugar and salt mixed with apple flavoring in it? You could experiment with mixes.

I know how hyper active my 4.5 year old gets after eating sugar....
Question is do you really want to feed sugar to an already hyper reactive animal you want to stay still for a shot?
Maybe better off to use the above recipe and leave the end result for them!

I would give it a try, worst thing that will happen is 1) you will get bears or 2) they will avoid it all together.
Or, you could set up a big Kool-Aid stand. When Bambi stops by for a cup, you blast him

Re: baiting deer with sugar
Beekeepers use sugar to make a syrup to feed their Bees before the nectar is flowing. So I would find a Beekeeper and trade the sugar for some of their Honey. Then buy some corn for feeding the deer. Better for the deer than sugar and easier to use.
