Project Flying Hatchet Part II..Buck Down!

Post by Drew »

Great Michigan fall hunting last night. Beautiful evening sitting in a new location I scouted out last March. New stand is in a big oak on an inside corner of a hay and clover field surrounded by hardwoods. Just after sunset I heard and saw a flash of a deer working its way around me. 10min later this guy decide to start a scrape on a neighboring tree but was hidden from my view by the brush.
Well he finally decided to move on and gave me a nice quartering away shot. I slipped that Centaur big game broadhead in behind his last rib aiming to hit his offside front leg. Got the nice mule kick and he ran all of 40yds before expiring just inside the woods. I was a little concerned at first because I couldn't find my arrow. Turns out after penetrating 3' of deer flesh, destroying all of the major arteries of the heart, the arrow stopped under the skin just in front of the offside leg. I cut the skin there and slid he arrow right out. At least the lunenok was working!!
I guess I picked the right stand location. This young stud never even knew I was there.

Nice big bodied 7pt. 168lbs dressed out

Thanks everyone! I'm pretty stoked as this is my first big buck. We are thinking 2.5yrs old maybe?

I am still kind of amazed at how this all turned out. It happened so fast that from the time I saw him to time I took the shot was probably 30sec. I have only captured this guy on camera at 2-4am. Absolutely no pics of daytime activity from him and I wasn't expecting to see him until late October at the earliest. We are seeing scrapes now and the 6pt my brother in law shot last wk was already chasing does.

Here is my borther-in-law Dan clowning around to give it perspective.
