Wyoming 2015 diy hunt

Post by halfbreed »

Just got back from the annual "out west" hunting trip. It was a hard hunt, but good. All 6 of us filled our tags. We had hard rain, hail storms, angry ranchers, rattlesnakes and everything in between. I think I was the only man in the whole county, maybe even state hunting with a crossbow. So lets get into it...

I was using: Excalibur matrix 380.
20" Gander Mountain tec hunter bolts.
( cuz they were on sale and had brass inserts.)
100 grain spitfire broadheads
HHA optimizer crossbow dial.

Shot a 2x2 mulie broadside at 72 yards off the shoulder and the bolt pass through the deer and traveled another 5 yards before sticking in the dirt. The deer ran about 40 yards back toward me and just dropped like a stone. Shot was about 3 inches right of where i was aiming. I am damn impressed with the performance of excalibur.

....sorry no pictures. Forgot the camera and my phone at home.... maybe on purpose for the phone. :)

Nice Buck!!

I lived in Wyoming almost 14 years and steered clear of Ranches. My only problem with the system there is that it is very difficult to get permission to cross their land to get to public land. For the Ranchers Big Game hunting is a Big Business. When I left in 1991 access to some public lands was still a big problem. The Sate Legislature wasn't very sympathetic to the hunter's plight. May be because a lot of them were Ranchers.

If you have the money some of the Ranches have excellent hunting.

Thank you everyone. The rancher thing started because after alot of research and and calls to to wardens out there my uncle and cousin took a raft down the powder river to get to some public land that was not accessible by land. They floated in and one of the ranchers saw them and called all the other ranchers and area warden for an emergency meeting. At the end of it all the warden printed out a supreme court ruling about rivers being public property and what they did was perfectly legal. The ranchers were not happy to say the least. I think most of it is because we used our brains and made calls and had the balls to do it... all legally.

....2 nasty hail storms came though and had the deer holed up and us too in the tent, suburban, or whatever shelter we could find at the time. After cleaning all the silt out of our weapons. My cousin and I shot deer on the same day. We were then regulated to, as my cousin said, " guiding the senior citizens." My dad and I walked into a wash and saw the "biggest mulie I've every seen" as my dad says when he tells the story, at 70 yards.. while im yelling at him to shoot, he watches it get up, bounce up the wash, pause at the top to look back at us and then bounce out of sight. Dad said he was awestruck and had a senior moment. He snapped out of it in time to see ass and hooves go over the top and out of our lives forever. Never even raised his rifle. Lol.
