Which one, NAP 170 grain Spitfire vs NAP 170 grain F.O.C.?

Post by yooper_man »

I want to try a 170 grain mechanical broad head. I currently use a NAP 170 grain Thunderhead Magnum, but they don't always fly the same as field points.

I am considering one of the following:

NAP 170 grain F.O.C.

versus

NAP 170 grain Spitfire Magnum

NAP has discontinued the following, so maybe that says something and I should give the NAP 170 grain F.O.C. a try.

NAP 170 grain Thunderhead Magnum = DISCONTINUED
NAP 170 grain Spitfire Magnum = DISCONTINUED

I solely use 18 inch Easton XX75 2219 aluminum shafts with 2 inch Bohning Blazer vanes. With this arrow tipped with a 170 grain broad head, my total arrow weight is 470 grains, which shoots perfectly from my Excalibur Matrix 355.

Thank you,
Andrew

It's the only Broadhead I use. Great performance! Review the previous threads.

Thanks SEW,

I've been thinking on trying the NAP 170 grain F.O.C. mechanical broad head for some time. I know my 470 grain total arrow/broad head weight will have the needed energy to deploy the blades.

I orient the FOC in the 9 and 3 o'clock position on deck and add 1 medium weight dental elastic when using the FOC out of my 405.
The performance of the FOC has me smiling every time over the last two deer and bear seasons. I might add that I find the POI within 1/2" at 25 yards using the FOC and the supplied 170 grain field points that I don't change my scope setting.

Thanks Normous,

Do you think I would need the additional dental elastic for my Matrix 355?

No, I would suggest them in the 405 and the 380 as added insurance. If your purchase a new pack of FOC broadheads I would resist the urge to open and close them as much as possible because the two blades are held by two clips and the clips can be worn down easily with repeated opening and closing.

Understood!

Do these clips need to be replaced after each kill /deployment?

What I did was purchase a blade replacement kit from NAP. 6 blades, 6 clips 6 screws are included with a small finger screwdriver.

I am not an expert on the clips but I did not change the clip if the blade was not bent. After putting a FOC arrow through a deer or bear I would take out the screws using a better micro screwdriver than the one NAP supplies and hot wash the dried blood, fat , etc from the blade, groove, and clip. If the blade was bent I would replace the blade, clip and screw and inspect the unused blade and clip and replace if needed

Not cleaning old dry blood and fat would only lead to a performance problems
