Re-serve or let it go?
Here's two photos of my serving. There are probably 300+ shots on it.
Its a stock excal string. I'm on the fence. This is my first crossbow so I don't have much exp. I have a new string I think I'm gonna put on and shoot in before this weekend, but not real sure how many shots one can typically get from a string, or what bad wear looks like.
Click on the photos for a good up close shot.
Thanks,
Brian

Re: Re-serve or let it go?
That to me looks like normal wear, I would rub in a little wax on your serving and your good to go.

Re: Re-serve or let it go?
I say wax it and let it fly awhile longer. Or since you have a new one use could use that one for a back up.

Wax as stated
**** PLUS agreed *****
Rotate string loops one turn on both sides.
ie rotate both ends in the same direct either forward or backwards .
(should maintain your brace height while it should change contact point on serving of the trigger claws)

Re: Re-serve or let it go?
I think in a close up I can see a break on the right side. If so, you ought to re-serve it before it wears on string material itself. Shoot your new string to break it in and re-serve this one while the other one is on the bow.
Re: Re-serve or let it go?
I kinda thought the same. The string looks better in the pics than in person.
Think I'll put the new string on tonight and let it start to stretch.
I used to serve my vert bows myself with pretty good luck. Is it about the same deal to do it your self, or is it cheap enough to bring or send the string somewhere?
Thanks again,
B

Re: Re-serve or let it go?
Well crap...
The warranty string I received is much too long. The serving is definitely in poor condition and needs fixed. I took the string off the bow and its pretty rough. I also calculated the number of shots based off my average session and it has closer to 250 shots.
I had the latches polished before I shot this string. This still seems like bad serving life to me. That's a string a month at the rate I'm going now!
How many shots should you be able to get from a stock string?

Get a serving tool, some serving material and build yourself a jig. Next time you have this situation you'll only be down for 10 mins. I like to have at least 3 or 4 strings so I don't have to get all my stuff out to reserve just one string.

3-4 strings is fine, but you ought to have at least 2. Break one in until it stops creeping and will maintain a brace height, tie it and wrap in a plastic baggie, put other string on and break it in as well. Now you have a string and a back up. You can change strings, set brace height and still be sighted in.NFH wrote:Get a serving tool, some serving material and build yourself a jig. You can build a jig like on Boo's site for about $20, a serving tool and spool of Angel Majesty 035 from Danny is about $35. You can serve about 20 strings or so from one jig spool give or take.

Re: Re-serve or let it go?
I plan to build the jig, however in the meantime I have a pair of D Miller Flemish strings on the way. Between those, the 2 stock strings and a serving jig I should be good for a while.
