OT smokeless powder shortage

Post by Carnivorous »

Not crossbow related but hunting related.

I have a nice new Savage smokeless muzzle loader that I am starting to set up.

Only problem I didn't see coming is the major powder shortage going on now for this gun. The powder I need is the Accurate arms 5744 powder.

If anyone sees a bottle of this stuff in your local gun store shoot me a pm.

Worst case scenario is I can use T7 but that defeats the purpose of owning a smokeless gun!! :(

Jeff , Im a smokeless savage owner also , Been using one for years now and love it . There are other powder choices than 5744 , My favorite is Reloader 7 which is somewhat easier to find and offers more velocity . If your interested in trying it just PM me your specifics regarding Bullet weight and Ill suggest some actual recorded speeds and notes . Mike

there are plenty of different powders available for smokeless ML's
hodgdon and imr has a lot to compare with the AA or RL powders.
I use imr-4227 in my smokeless ML... its fast, safe and half the pressures
of some that are out there because of volume needed for my wanted velocity.
I use a saboted .458 300gr sjhp in my 50cal
h&r smokeless conversion I made. its done quite a few DRT's in early
season here.

VV-110 (42-45gs), 4759 (same) , AA 2400 (34 gs), VV-120 58-60gs, IMR-4227 (works well in 10ML-2, not original 10 ML), 4198 (H or IMR - forgot actual for a 50, I only shoot 40 & 45s think 65-70gs). All these are for saboted 450-452 250-300g bullets. I did a lot of the testing with Toby Bs on the original 10ML and later the 10ML-2. Stay away from Ltl Gun!,,

lil'gun and imr-4227 is very close.....but there is a difference to be noted.
L'G and its shot start pressures were very high.
we have piezo transducer pressure instruments in the test cell.
so we are aware of the dangers of many powders and there loading.....

The bigger problem for us north of the border is getting most of the popular powders .
Shotgun powders for trap and skeet .
Reloader series .

The major problem with Ltl Gun is inconsistent granulation size. I actually had a 10ML explode on me complete with injuries due to the small particles left as the bottle was down to near the bottom. They passed thru the vent liner into the module(10 ML not 10ML-2) and the module exploded. Also, as pressures get into the 40s and 50s, it becomes extremely erratic pressure-wise. It is primarily a 410 powder and is formulated to work in the low pressure arena.
Another example of a problem area is VV-110(rods) and H-110(spherical). Using H-110 can ruin your entire day.
Not a recommendation but many have used 14/61 4759/H-322 with 250 bullets and the better duplex of 19/51 of the same. Appx 2630'/sec.
My favorite is 45g VV-110/Parker 250-275 BE with a wonder wad between the sabot and powder. 2400-2430'/sec. Difference in 80F and 20F velocity is less than 50'/sec. That's temp stable. Extreme accuracy.

Not my business but if you ship powder from the US to Canada you will be breaking the law , you cannot send it without the proper export papers, and if caught the penalty is pretty severe, not to mention shipping dangerous goods from the US to Canada would cost a fortune

I've got a NULA smokeless ML, and I'm using SR4759 and still have a few years worth on hand. I only sighted in last year and ended up never hunting with my rifle, and I've tagged out in OK already for this year so won't be shooting a ML at all.

Yes I'm aware of this,,,,I didn't offer to ship or send into Canada , If somebody though know is in Michigan and heading back to Ontario and they wanted to take it across its on them ...I have exported tooling and other things all over including Canada so I'm very well aware of the paper work and time needed ... Thank You ..for your concern or your knowledge
