Strange deer noise

Post by Helmut »

Sitting in blind this evening and sudden heard a strange screaming sound very close to me. Sounded like a large parrot sceech.
After I locate sound direction I could see the white tail flipping then bounding away. I have never heard that sound out of a deer before.
Got to assume it was some warning vocalization but not sure.
Stayed put and an hour later got busted again. Oh well :?
At least I heard that very funny sound

It was Bigfoot warning the deer of your presence. You should've had some Jack Links with you for safety.

Now then, get your equipment, your quiver and bow, and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

That is what is called BLOWING. Sounds horrible, but it is to warn other deer in the area of danger. God Awful sound.

Worst thing I EVER heard from a deer was a buddy spined a doe -- I heard the screeching sound from over 300 yds --- he managed to finish the job by the time I got there --- UGH!

I spooked one real close up when I was carrying the trash out one night. I thought an El Chupacabra had gotten me for sure. The fact that the sound comes from eye level makes it worse...

LOL my kids boyfriend tried describing the sound to me the other morning after he had it happen to him in his blind before sunrise.

He said" yeah I was in the blind and all of a sudden i heard real heavy breathing from three different spots around me". I said like this and proceeded to imitate it" he went yep that was it.

I said you got blown! Which promptly turned all the girls heads in the living room. I got the weirdest looks until I explained.

I been blown many times but a year or two ago I was watching a buck working the field in my direction. I had already decided he wasnt a shooter but i was checking him out through my scope.
When he finally worked his way close to me and got in my wind he did that scream blow.
Funny to me because he looked like a nice beefy manly man deer but sounded like a woman!! Needless to say every thing 5 miles around heard it.
Ive never heard that high of a pitch from a doe .

I have heard that sound many times over the years since I spend lots of time in the woods. The last time was Saturday night when I was getting ready to leave my stand - I had a doe and a fawn that would not leave and I was ready to exit the woods. I whistled a couple times, but the doe would just look in my direction for a few seconds, then go back to eating. lol
I finally started making a kissing noise which probably sounded like one of the red squirrels in the area and she just looked my direction and went back to eating again. I did it again but just kept doing it and they finally walked off a few yards and she stopped and blew at me, then went another 20 yards and blew again. I could hear her blowing every couple minutes as they were leaving which is a good sign. If they blow once or twice and vacate the area then you have been busted, but if they blow every couple minutes as they slowly wander off then they are not sure what was going on and will be more likely to return without much fear.

By far the worse sound I have heard in the woods was a rabbit being killed by an owl. The rabbit screams just like a young child. It will make your hair stand on end.
