Titanium Fasteners

Post by Hi5 »

My kit should be arriving very soon. So, I'd like to be prepared when they get here.

Some posts have commented about how a release agent is required to be applied to the threads. Other posts have indicated that blue Loctite is to be applied to the threads.

This would seem to be quite opposite advice, one to the other.

So, what's the better approach for application on a crossbow? Glue them in with blue Loctite, or, keep them slick and easy to remove?

It is recommended to use a high solids, mos2 anti-seize. They hold tight, don't loosen, and remove easily when necessary. I bought the ti-moly paste they sell for around $5.

I have used blue loktite and it works, but it is not what Ti64 recommends. Enjoy your Ti kit and good luck this season.

Not sure if the loctite would be enough to prevent galvanic corrosion between the titanium and aluminum. Could always give them a call or ask through their website.

The MoS2 should bond to the metals enough to prevent corrosion. How well does everything stay fastened together on the bow with the vibration, especially if you are adding lubricant to all the fasteners?

I did all the front end of my bow the other day,now I got to do it all over again with moly gunk to stop the galvanic bonding .
Shame that it wasn't included in the kit with the option of not to have it if you didn't need it.
I found some stuff the bike makers use.

Just looked at these on their website... interesting. Any idea how much weight they save? And does lower weight affect sound?

Would love to see a pic... How will you deal with camo'ing bright metal?

What is the "stuff" bike makers use? Where did you find it? I would be grateful for this information, especially if it can involve a Canadian source.

Blue Loctite is what I recommend, it will act as a lubricant and keep it from galvanizing which is what causes them to seize, as well as set to a plastic state and keep them from loosening. I have talked with the tech's at loctite about this, and have used with for years with Titanium alloys,, I laso bought the moly from Ti a couple years ago,,, never used it for bows, but it's great on fishing reels, and firearms,,,,,,

Thanks Wildcatter.

I had a hunch about the matter, but I appreciate the reassurance from someone with practical experience -- and someone who also checked with locktite.

Good Stuff!!!

Moly paste definitely won't contribute to loosening and since it is what is recommended for these applications, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. In my experience on a crossbow, it won't loosen, and from ti64's experience in the world of racing, the anti seize didn't contribute to loosening either. Blue loktite worked for me too though.

As for including the moly paste in the kit, I'll suggest it, but cost would likely have to reflect it :?

Someone asked about what the fasteners look like and the overall weight reduction. Below is a picture of a 330 with a full kit, it saves about 1oz in mass but it is weight that is out in front so it feels like you've lost more. To me the biggest feature is the rust/strip resistance and beefier design of each fastener, made to Danny Miller's specs.
