Matrix 380 vs 405

Post by hotdog »

Guys I have a question for the ones that have shot both bows.

Are you really gaining that much with the 405 over the 380?

I already own a Matrix 380 and Equinox, but for some reason I've got an itch for another matrix. The reason I bought the 380 was its size and more speed, don't get me wrong the Equinox is a fast bow, I just wanted a little more compact crossbow.

I just don't know where to buy another 380 or a 405. I like what I've been hearing about how flat shooting the 405 is, but my 380 is pretty fast and flat shooting also.

To me the only reason to get the M405 would be to launch heavier arrows at M380 or M355 velocities. I've been slowing increasing arrow weight and will probably end up somewhere in the upper 400's to low 500gr region as I'm tooling up for Africa though and want to throw a heavy arrow. But a 530gr 18" bolt with a 20% FOC at 355-360fps is a smacker for sure and still plenty fast enough for a very flat trajectory!

I just used this description with my brother in law who is working up his desire to leave his wheeled xbow for an Excal. The M355 is like a .270, the M380 a 7mm mag, and the M405 is a .338 Lapua.

I use the same, very low drag arrows out of both my 380 & 405. The 405 is primary because I want the flatter trajectory for longer range. My arrows weigh 398.3g and are configured as such: 18" spine indexed Zombies, AL inserts(26g), plastic flat nocks, Blazers (likely would prefer SK200 or SK300) with 4 degree offset NOT helical, FOCs(170g - low drag, no steering, no noise).
I want max practical range. The 405 is flatter shooting.
